Daniel Leitner has helped the Blue Raider men's tennis program continue its rise since his hiring as assistant coach on Aug. 20, 2015.
In his first year at Middle Tennessee, Leitner helped coach Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore to All-Conference USA First Team Singles honors and Ayed Zatar Cordero to the Second Team Singles lineup. The pair also won First Team Doubles in their freshman season.
Morell again won C-USA honors in Leitner's second season on the MT coaching staff, as he teamed up with then-freshman Tom Moonen to earn a spot on the First Team Doubles and Second Team Singles lists. Gian Issa and Miguel Negre Fernandez were also named to Second Team Doubles in 2017.
"Daniel was a great addition to our coaching staff,” Borendame said. “He had an amazing playing career at South Alabama, and I have a lot of respect for him after seeing his game develop and his intense work ethic. He came to us highly recommended from his past coaches and I am excited to be working side-by-side with him. He gives great input on coaching the team."
Leitner played collegiately at South Alabama from 2011-15 where he achieved a national ranking in singles (#49) and doubles (#51) and led his team to a No. 42 ranking. Leitner was also a team captain for three years and was the Regional Winner of ITA Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship and Leadership Award.
The Niederfischbach, Germany native enjoyed his finest season in 2015 and qualified for the NCAA Div I Singles Championships. He was named South Alabama Male Student-Athlete of the Year and Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
All told, Leitner was a three-time All-Sun Belt Conference First Team Singles selection, an All-Sun Belt Conference First Team Doubles partner in 2015 and the Most Valuable Player of the South Alabama Men’s Tennis Team in 2012, 2014, and 2015.
During the summer months in college, Leitner was a coach for the Tennis Federation of the German district Rhineland- Palatine. During his time there, he conducted tennis lessons with junior prospects in the academy and planned and organized trips to tournaments of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) throughout Europe.
Leitner also held a role as an Assistant Tennis Professional at the Great Island Yacht Club in West Yarmouth, Mass. in 2015.
