Jim McGuire completed his sixth season at the helm of the Blue Raider program after serving as an assistant and associate head coach for 20 years at Middle Tennessee. He was promoted to the head coaching position on Aug. 9, 2012.
McGuire put together a 162-175-1 overall record in his six seasons at Middle Tennessee. He also produced a 220-116 mark as Head Coach at Rend Lake (Ill.) Junior College for an overall record of 382-291-1. McGuire notched his 300th career victory in a 7-6 win at Charlotte, April 18, 2015.
He earned his 100th career victory at Middle Tennessee in a 9-3 win at Kennesaw State on March 11, 2016. McGuire also picked up his 150th win at Middle Tennessee on March 10, 2018 in a 10-5 victory at Old Dominion.
In his six seasons as Head Coach at Middle Tennessee, McGuire has produced the Conference USA Newcomer of the Year (Ronnie Jebavy, 2015), 14 All-Conference performers and had 13 players selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. McGuire has had three additional players sign free agent contracts.
In 2018, McGuire had three players make the all-conference team with Austin Dennis (1st team), Aaron Aucker (2nd team), and Jake Wyrick (2nd team) all being honored.
The Blue Raiders won four-of-five conference road series’, culminating to an 8-7 road conference record.
Under McGuire’s tutelage, Senior Aaron Aucker was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-American Baseball Team as selected by CoSIDA.
In the 2018 campaign, the Blue Raiders picked up impressive victories over #15 Vanderbilt, Tennessee, WVU, Florida Atlantic (RV), and a series win at Louisiana Tech.
In 2017, McGuire developed shortstop Riley Delgado who was drafted in the 9th Round of the MLB Draft by the Atlanta Braves. Delgado was one of only five Blue Raiders to be drafted in the Top 10 rounds of the MLB Draft since 2005.
McGuire helped mold Aaron Aucker into a First Team All-Conference performer in 2017, along with Delgado who was named Second Team All-Conference for the second consecutive year.
Under McGuire command in 2017, the Blue Raiders became the only school in C-USA to finish with three batters in the Top Eight of the conference in batting average.
In 2016, McGuire developed the Blue Raiders’ first freshman All-American since 2012 when Blake Benefield was so honored by Collegiate Baseball.
McGuire was awarded the Conference USA Keith LeClair Coach of the Year award in 2015 after leading Middle Tennessee to 19 Conference USA wins and 32 overall victories in the program’s second year competing as a member of the league. The Blue Raiders spent every week of the season atop the C-USA standings before finishing second and settling for the No. 4 seed, due to tiebreakers, for the C-USA Championships. During 2015, the Blue Raiders won the series at nationally-ranked Florida Atlantic and secured a victory at nationally-ranked Rice.
The Blue Raiders reached the championship game of their bracket before falling to FIU in the 2015 C-USA Championship. Middle Tennessee eliminated No. 15-ranked Rice from the tournament, marking the first time it had been knocked from the event in its first two games since 2008.
In 2014, McGuire led Middle Tennessee baseball to new heights while competing in the program's inaugural season as a member of C-USA. The Blue Raiders finished fourth in the league with a 17-13 record and won their first-ever C-USA Championship game over Old Dominion on May 21. McGuire also led MT to a series win over 10th-ranked Rice during the regular season.
McGuire's team improved by three wins in 2014 with an overall ledger of 31-27. Three of his players were selected first team all-conference, including pitcher Zac Curtis who led the country in strikeouts and C-USA home-run leader Jared Allen.
In his first season, McGuire guided the Blue Raiders to 28 victories and helped Middle Tennessee own an impressive 4-1 mark against SEC opponents.
His first SEC victory came with a 2-1 thriller over Auburn on Feb. 23. He followed that performance up a month later as the Blue Raiders toppled No. 2 Vanderbilt 4-1 at Reese Smith Field. McGuire's squads also swept in-state rival Tennessee in a home-and-home series, and defeated the Vols in Murfreesboro in the only meeting between the teams in 2015.
Later in the spring, the Raiders secured a 6-5 victory over 20th-ranked South Alabama and for the first time in program history swept the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns.
McGuire became just the third different Blue Raider coach since 1974, following John Stanford (1974-87) and Peterson (1988-2012). He is the 21st coach since the program began in 1913.
After eight years as an assistant under Peterson, McGuire was elevated following the 2000 season to associate head coach and moved up once again following Peterson's retirement in July of 2012.
During his tenure, McGuire served as recruiting coordinator for the program and worked with the infielders and hitters. He also has taken an active role in coordinating evaluation visits with professional scouts as well as organizing baseball camps and the annual ’Boro Bash summer tournament.
He helped Peterson with all three of the Blue Raiders’ major fundraisers — the Grand Slam Fish Fry, the Groundhog Day Luncheon, and the Chuck Taylor Golf Tournament — and served as liaison for placing players on summer teams across the country.
After the Blue Raiders’ historical season in 2009, SEBaseball.com named McGuire the Sun Belt Assistant Coach of the Year for his work with the record-breaking offense.
Throughout his 25 years in Murfreesboro, McGuire has been a key ingredient in making Blue Raider baseball known throughout the country. He has been a part of 14 winning seasons, six trips to the NCAA Tournament, seven league championships, and five conference tournament titles. McGuire has helped mold 58 players who have been drafted by the pros and 99 first-team all-conference performers, including six conference players of the year and 11 All-Americans. The Blue Raiders are 646-555-1 during his tenure, a .538 winning percentage.
Before joining the Blue Raider staff in the summer of 1992, McGuire was head coach at Rend Lake (Ill.) Junior College from 1989 to 1992. During his stint there, he compiled a record of 220-116, a winning percentage of .655. During his four-year tenure, McGuire’s teams turned in four second-place finishes in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference. His 1992 squad was Section III champion and Region 24 runner-up.
McGuire served as assistant coach at Rend Lake from 1987 to 1988 and began his coaching career at Missouri-St. Louis in 1986.
McGuire’s playing career began at Illinois State before he transferred to Rend Lake CC. The final two years of his collegiate career were spent under the legendary Woody Hunt at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn.
The Belleville, Ill., native played baseball and basketball at Freeburg High School.
McGuire is married to the former Lynn Christophe from Belleville, Ill., and they have two daughters, Kristen and Katie.
