Jones joins 1,000-point club
CLARKSVILLE – Playing its third game in four days and coming off a long trip to Reno, Nev., Middle Tennessee put together a complete effort in an 86-55 win against Austin Peay at the Dunn Center Monday.
Brea Edwards and Rebecca Reuter produced strong performances, and junior standout Olivia Jones became the 29th member of the program's 1,000-point club for the Blue Raiders, who improved to 3-3.
Edwards scored 29 points and was a sizzling 9-for-12 from the field, including 5-for-6 from 3-point range, and added six rebounds. Reuter finished with a career-high 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting, while also adding a team-best seven rebounds.
"It was a great team win," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "When you trust the system and run the offense good things generally happen. I'm really proud of this basketball team. We played well offensively, defensively and we hit the boards hard. It was our third game in four days coming off a long trip so there are lots of positives with this win."
Jones had her best game of the season with 15 points and also shot a high percentage. Jones joined the 1,000-point club when she hit the first of two free throws with two seconds remaining in the third quarter.
"I didn't realize I had reached the 1,000 points until Coach Insell told us in the locker room after the game," Jones said. "I am happy to reach that mark. There have been so many great players come through Middle Tennessee so to join that elite company is quite an accomplishment, and it means a lot to me. It's even more special that we won the game."
Middle Tennessee connected on 30-of-62 shots from the field for a sparking 48.4 percent shooting night. The Blue Raiders also shot 50 percent (7-for-14) from the 3-point stripe. It marks the second straight game, and third in four games, that Middle Tennessee has surpassed the 80-point mark.
Middle Tennessee broke the game open with a solid second quarter. The Blue Raiders led 18-14 after one quarter but a strong shooting second quarter, keyed by Edwards, enabled Middle Tennessee to put distance between it and the Lady Governors.
With Edwards seemingly scoring at will, the Blue Raiders outscored Austin Peay 22-14 to open a 40-28 lead at the intermission. Edwards scored 15 of her 29 in the frame and was 5-for-5 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range.
The Blue Raiders never let up in the second half as they maintained control of the game and coasted to victory.
Alex Johnson, who was named C-USA Freshman of the Week earlier in the day, finished with seven points and five rebounds. Abbey Sissom added six points, four rebounds and three assists. TiAnna Porter tallied six points and three rebounds, while Gabby Lyon had a solid outing with five points, four rebounds and a team-best four assists. Caroline Warden finished with four points.
Middle Tennessee will now get a well-deserved break before facing Xavier on the road Sunday. Tipoff in Cincinnati is 1 p.m.
