MT enjoys 69-53 win
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee players are happy to be going home for the holidays.
They are even happier to be heading into their break coming off a win, following a convincing 69-53 triumph against rival Tennessee Tech in front of 4,925 at Murphy Center. In fact, the Blue Raiders have won five of their last six overall.
Middle Tennessee won its 11th straight against Tennessee Tech, overall, representing the longest winning streak for either team in the series. In fact, Blue Raider Head Coach Rick Insell improved to 11-0 against the team Middle Tennessee has played more than any other foe. Sunday marked the 78th meeting between the teams with the Blue Raiders now holding a 40-38 advantage.
"This was a good win for us and it is a good way to head into the holidays," said senior guard Brea Edwards, who led Middle Tennessee with a double-double as she scored 20 points and pulled 10 rebounds. "It is always good to spend time with family and friends during this time but it makes the mood even happier with the win. Coach Insell is good to give us time off to spend with family. We wanted to head into this (five-day) break on a high note."
Edwards was a big part of the reason for Middle Tennessee's festive spirit, but she was not the only Blue Raider to shine against Tennessee Tech.
Olivia Jones finished with 11 points and was the only other player in double figures as Middle Tennessee (6-4) displayed a balanced scoring attack that saw nine different players get into the scoring column. Abbey Sissom added eight points and a career-high six rebounds, and senior point guard Caroline Warden had her best game of the season coming back from offseason knee surgery with eight points on 3-for-4 shooting.
"Abbey and Caroline gave us some great minutes off of the bench there in the second quarter," Insell said. "We outscored them 20-5 in the quarter to kind of separate ourselves and those two players were a big part of that. Caroline really played well in the second quarter there. She ran our team well. I was hoping to have her back full-go by January and we are headed in that direction."
Rebecca Reuter added seven points and seven rebounds, and Ty Petty had six more assists to go with her four points. Petty has dished six or more assists five times this season, but it was one of the nation's top performers who continued to put up big numbers in Edwards.
The senior guard from Rockport, Ill., has scored 20 or more six times, including four of five home games. She came into the game leading the nation in 3-point field goals per game with four per outing and connected on 4-of-8 against the Golden Eagles (3-8).
She got the Blue Raiders rolling with two quick 3-pointers to start the game and Middle Tennessee never looked back. In fact, the Blue Raiders never trailed.
Middle Tennessee led 14-8 after the first quarter and stretched the advantage to 34-13 at the half after limiting Tech to five second-quarter points. The Blue Raiders, who connected on 16-of-20 free throws for 80 percent, led by as many as 30 early in the fourth quarter before Insell turned to the reserves for most of the remainder of the final quarter.
The Blue Raider defense was stifling. Middle Tennessee held Tennessee Tech to 32 percent shooting (16-for-50), including a dismal 10 percent (1-for-10) from the 3-point line. The Golden Eagles did make it to the free-throw line 30 times, where they connected on 20 points for 38 percent of their offense.
Middle Tennessee also continued its prowess on the offensive boards. Insell's Blue Raiders came into the game ranked 10th nationally in offensive rebounds with 18 per game, and they pulled 17 against Tennessee Tech.
The Blue Raiders will enjoy a five-day break before they return to practice and prepare for the final non-conference game of the regular season at Ohio, Dec. 29.
