Averaged 24.5 points in two wins
IRVINE, Texas – Middle Tennessee senior guard Brea Edwards has been named the C-USA Player of the Week for the second time after helping lead the Blue Raiders to a pair of wins last week.
A panel of media voters selected Edwards as the Player of the Week after she averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and shot 52 percent from the field (16-for-31), including 42 percent (8-for-19) from 3-point range, to key victories against Missouri State and Tennessee Tech. She also connected on 90 percent of her free throws, knocking down nine of 10.
Edwards has scored 20 or more in six times in 10 games.
"Brea is a great shooter and she has been knocking down some big shots for our basketball team," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "She's worked hard and she's been in the gym putting up shots. That's part of the reason for shooting such a high percentage, along with executing our offense and hitting the shots when you have opportunities."
Edwards, who has either won or finished second in the Player of the Week balloting four times this season, said she overwhelmed with the honors.
"It means a lot when people recognize your efforts, it really does, but the biggest thing for me is that our team won two big basketball games," Edwards said. "We had several players make key contributions to help win those games."
Edwards provided her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds against Tennessee Tech, but she did her best work of the week in the previous game against Missouri State.
Edwards connected on a career-high 11 field goals and tied her career high of three steals in a 29-point outburst against Missouri State. The 30 points were the second-highest scoring total of her career.
More importantly, Edwards' offensive prowess helped bring Middle Tennessee back from a seven-point, second half deficit. Edwards was at her best when it mattered most, making several clutch shots in the second half rally. Edwards had a personal 10-0 run in the comeback.
The Rockford, Ill., native was 7-for-10 from the field in the second half, including 5-for-6 in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.
Edwards leads the nation in 3-point field goals per game with 4.0 and she connected on four in each win. She is also among national leaders in 3-point field goal percentage, 3-point field goals made and scoring. Edwards is averaging 21 points per game.
Middle Tennessee will next be in action when it faces Ohio in Athens, Ohio, Dec. 29.
