Jackrabbits edge out the Blue Raiders 65-61
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A solid defensive effort for the Blue Raiders kept them in striking distance, but an untimely scoring drought down the stretch allowed South Dakota State to seal the win, 65-61, on Sunday night at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
Darnell Harris led the Blue Raiders for the fifth time this season with 14 points. Reggie Upshaw added 13 points and eight rebounds while Perrin Buford had 11 points and six boards.
Middle Tennessee (7-4) tallied eight steals and five blocks on the defensive end of the floor, but shot just 39.0 percent from the field and was held to four made three-pointers, its lowest output from behind the arc this season.
The Raiders held South Dakota State (11-3) to 38.6 percent shooting but were outrebounded by the Jackrabbits 49-32, including a 15-5 edge on the offensive glass.
Middle Tennessee stormed back from a 10-0 deficit to take its first lead of the game 20-19 at the 5:58 mark in the first half. Upshaw fueled the early comeback with nine of the Raiders first 11 points, including a huge dunk in traffic to begin swinging the momentum.
The Blue Raiders took a 31-27 lead into halftime, but a slow start to the second half let the Jackrabbits take the lead back early in a competitive second half.
Head coach Kermit Davis called a timeout with 5:54 remaining while trailing 56-51 looking to ignite a run, but a scoring drought of over three minutes leading into the final minute of play kept the Blue Raiders from regaining the lead.
Middle Tennessee returns to the Murphy Center Wednesday, Dec. 30 to host Trevecca. The contest will tip at 6:00 p.m.
