Raiders down Trevecca 82-67 to head into C-USA play
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – In the final game of 2015 and the last contest before Conference USA play begins, Middle Tennessee downed Trevecca by a score of 82-67 behind a monster night from Reggie Upshaw.
"I'm really proud of Reggie tonight," head coach Kermit Davis said. "He and Ed (Simpson) were our best practice players the last couple of days and I think that really showed tonight."
Upshaw led all scorers with a career-high 32 points on 13-16 shooting while also filling his stat line with 12 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.
His 32 marked the first time a Blue Raider scored over 30 since James Washington had 34 against Houston Baptist. It was also the first time a Raider tallied at least 30 points and 10 boards since Aylton Tesch did so on Feb. 5, 1998.
Edward Simpson added 11 points and four assists while Perrin Buford fell just shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds for the Raiders.
Middle Tennessee (8-4) shot 48.4 percent from the field and pulled down 44 rebounds on the night, allowing Trevecca (4-9) to total only 31 rebounds.
The Trojans struck first in the contest, taking a 2-0 lead, but the Raiders answered right back and quickly went up 5-2. MT would go on to hold the lead for the remainder of the game.
Already out to an 11-point advantage at the third media timeout, the Blue Raiders caught fire. A 12-0 run stretched the lead to 37-14 at the 3:56 mark.
Middle Tennessee held a 38-25 lead at the break, led by 14 first half points from Reggie Upshaw.
After Trevecca pulled within 10 early in the second half, Xavier Habersham gave a double-digit lead back to the Raiders with a layup at the 8:58 mark and followed the bucket up with a ferocious block on the defensive end.
A Reggie Upshaw dunk on the ensuing possession put the score at 60-47 and gave the Raiders a jolt to finish strong in the final minutes.
Middle Tennessee hits the hardwood again on Sunday, Jan. 3 in Birmingham, Ala. The contest against UAB will take place at 2:00 p.m. in Bartow Arena.
