Broke C-USA's freshman passing record
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee quarterback Brent Stockstill was voted Conference USA's Freshman of the Year as announced by the league office on Wednesday. Stockstill becomes the school's first-ever Freshman of the Year.
Stockstill, who broke the league's record for passing yards by a freshman, enters the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl with 3,678 passing yards on 301 completions and 27 touchdowns. All went down as single-season records for the Blue Raiders. He also set single-season marks in attempts, passing yards per game, 300-yard passing games and consecutive 300-yard passing games.
Stockstill currently ranks 11th nationally in passing yards, 15th in passing touchdowns and seventh in completions per game while also leading all freshmen in those categories.
The lefthander stands 380 passing yards shy of breaking Jameis Winston's NCAA Freshman record of 4,057 yards and is 21 completions from establishing a new freshman completions mark (Jared Lorenzen 321).
Stockstill and the Blue Raiders will return to the practice field on Saturday in preparation for the Dec. 24 matchup against Western Michigan in the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl.
