Series finale Monday at 3 PM
Middle Tennessee improves to 4-1 on the season and will host the series finale against WIU (0-2) on Monday afternoon. First pitch at Reese Smith Jr. Field is set for 3 p.m.
GAME ONE
The Blue Raiders led 8-0 after three and plated at least one run in each inning, but WIU's offense came to life in the fourth with two runs or more in each of the following frames during the high scoring affair. Sophomores Kevin Dupree (3-for-3; 2B, 4 RBI, 3 R) and Kaleb King (3-for-6; RBI, 2 R) paced MT with career-high performances at the plate.
Jared Allen (1-for-6; HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) launched his first home run of the season in the second, leading to four Blue Raider runs. MT followed up with three more in the third after Jake Ingold (2-for-5) started the frame with a leadoff double.
MT went up 11-2 after four innings but the Leathernecks plated five runs in the fifth to get back in it.
Starter Johnathan Frebis (2-0) tossed five innings for the win, but was charged with six earned runs on 10 hits.
The Leathernecks got within a run in the eighth with the score 15-14; however, Ronnie Jebavy tallied his only hit of the game to lead off the home half of the inning and King came up clutch in the next at-bat with an RBI single to provide insurance.
Nathan Foriest then closed the door in the ninth for his second consecutive save.
Both teams combined for 27 hits and 27 runners left on base, while the pitchers on both sides struggled with a combined 12 walks and nine hit batters. The Leathernecks also balked in a run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning.
WIU's Tom Constand (0-1) lasted three innings and was charged with the loss after giving up six earned runs on five hits and four walks.
GAME TWO
The nightcap saw a lower scoring contest as the temperature dropped near freezing. The Leathernecks struck first with two runs in the third inning, but the Blue Raiders displayed resiliency and responded with three of their own in the bottom frame to gain a 3-2 advantage.
Austin Bryant (1-for-3; 2B, RBI, 2 R) extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI double in the inning, becoming the first Blue Raider to establish a 10-game streak since Michael Adkins accomplished the feat last season.
Two batters later, Adkins (2-for-4; 2B, 3 RBI) delivered an RBI single to even the score at 2-2. Ingold came up next and plated the third run on a sacrifice fly to center.
Kooper Kessler struck out seven hitters in four innings of work, finishing one punchout short of his career-high set in his last outing. Kessler got a huge strikeout in the top of the fourth to escape a bases-loaded jam.
Adkins continued his dominance at the plate, knocking in his team-leading 13th and 14th RBI on a double down the left-field line to push MT's lead to 5-2 in the fourth.
The Leathernecks threatened with two runs in the seventh, but the combination of Blake Stansberry and Sam Alton prevented the visitors from doing more damage. Stansberry (1-0) earned his first career victory in three innings of one-hit relief, while Alton picked up his first save.
WIU's Joe Mortillaro took the loss in the nightcap after surrendering five runs on six hits and five walks through three and two-thirds.
