MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – It will be a season full of excitement for the Middle Tennessee women's tennis program, as the Blue Raiders will experience many firsts along the way.
Charlie Ramsay will begin his first spring season as head coach of the Blue Raiders after a successful fall in which the team played in three events. Chattanooga native David Henry will join the staff as an assistant coach.
The team will feature three seniors: Brittany Huxley, Darya Shulzhanok and Giulia Squadrin. Sarah Sediri will be entering her junior year along with newcomer Alory Pereira. Three freshmen join the squad in 2016 to complete the roster: Maddie Brooks, Costanza Magazzini and Luisa Zirilli.
The brand new, state-of-the-art Adams Tennis Complex will be home to five regular season indoor matches, as well as the Conference USA Championships. "It will be a lot of fun to open our season at our new tennis center and hopefully get a lot of good support from our tennis community," said Ramsay.
The new facility will host its first ever Middle Tennessee event when the Blue Raiders women's tennis program faces off against Belmont on Friday at 4 p.m. The Bruins will have eight players returning from a team that went 6-15 last season, which included a shutout loss to the Blue Raiders. The match will be Belmont's first action of 2016 as well.
After the match against the Bruins, MT will host Kennesaw State on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 3 p.m. The Owls will be looking to get this season off on the right foot after having a 3-14 season in 2015. Newly promoted Director of Tennis Eduardo Rincon leads his team into Murfreesboro with six returning players and two newcomers.
Chattanooga, UT-Martin and ETSU will come to the Adams Tennis Complex in February to play MT. Outdoor play will begin in March, with Murray State traveling to Murfreesboro on March 23. Alabama A&M visits on April 9, The regular season is set to conclude against Western Kentucky on April 16.
An impressive road slate awaits the Blue Raiders this season, as they go to Miami, Florida to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend against preseason ITA ranked No. 13 Miami (FL). A week later, No. 22 TCU hosts MT in Fort Worth, Texas. A spring break business trip to California will include a showdown with No. 70 UC-Irvine. Then, the Blue Raiders will play in Tampa, Florida, where they will face off against No. 55 Columbia on March 19.
"We have a great schedule this spring filled with opportunities to play several good teams," continued Ramsay. "I'm very excited to get this season underway and I know that our girls are itching to get out and compete alongside one another."
MT is proud to be the host of the 2016 C-USA Championships at the Adams Tennis Complex on April 21-24. It will mark the first time the women's tennis conference tournament has been in Murfreesboro since the school became a member of Conference USA.
