Williams, Kiptebeny, Patton earn awards
IRVING, Texas – In the first weekly Conference USA indoor track & field awards of the season, three Blue Raiders were represented with Jacob Patten, Pershawna Williams and Josphine Kiptebeny earning awards.
Patten, a freshman from Memphis, Tennessee, competed in the high jump at the Ed Temple Classic Sunday and was named C-USA Male Field Athlete of the Week. Patten won the high jump, clearing 2.05 meters (6-8.75) and his jump would rank as the fifth best in C-USA.
"He really has some talent and it is untapped," said head coach Dean Hayes. "He works hard and does a really good job in the high jump. I am especially happy for him being a newcomer as this doesn't usually happen."
The Memphis native has the second-best jump in C-USA after leaping 2.11 meters at the Vanderbilt Opener in December.
"We are going to count on Jacob to score points for us at the Conference USA Championships," said Hayes. "I fell that he has the potential to be in the NCAA Championships someday."
Williams, a senior from Pensacola, Florida, was named C-USA Female Field Athlete of the Week after her performances in the triple jump and high jump.
"This is Pershawna's (Williams) senior year and she has worked very hard," Hayes said. "She has done so much better this year already than what she did last year. I am glad to see her making her comeback."
Williams notched a personal-best and Conference USA leading distance in the triple jump, bounding 12.74 meters (41-9.75) while finishing second. Her distance also ranks second in the NCAA.
The Florida native secured a second-place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.69 meters (5-6.5).
"She has worked hard all four years and has developed," said Hayes. "Pershawna has done a good job for us and has worked hard academically. I am happy for her as this is good recognition for her and her efforts."
Kiptebeny earned C-USA Female Track Athlete of the Week honors after her performance in the 5,000 meters. The Eldoret, Kenya native raced to first in the 5K, securing the top spot in 16:53.45.
"I am probably as proud of her as anybody we have had," stated Hayes. "She has come in and done very well academically and will graduate. She has worked hard and developed on the track, and is very tough mentally."
Kiptebeny's 5,000 meter time at the Ed Temple Classic ranks as the 20th fastest time in the NCAA, while also ranks first in Conference USA.
Middle Tennessee continues competition Jan. 15-16 at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee.
