MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – As the 2016 season opens this weekend, Middle Tennessee men's tennis head coach Jimmy Borendame and the Blue Raiders are excited to host Chattanooga and Vanderbilt at the new Adams Tennis Complex.
Chattanooga is set to play the Blue Raiders on Jan. 16 at 12 p.m., where free pizza and a free clinic will be provided for fans. The Mocs finished the 2015 campaign with a record of 5-16 and are riding a two match losing streak. They took the doubles point in the match against MT last season, but eventually were downed 6-1 by the Blue Raiders.
"I am very excited for these opening matches and I can't wait to get our first match at the ATC under our belt," Borendame said. "Chattanooga is always a solid team, and last year they took the doubles from us and I thought we didn't step up that day in doubles."
Free T-shirts and free popcorn will be provided to fans that attend the match against Vanderbilt on Monday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m.
The Commodores enter the 2016 season ranked No. 25 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Men's National Team Rankings, released on Jan. 5. They return seven players from a team that went 20-8 last season. Vanderbilt was bounced in the second round of the SEC Tournament after losing 4-1 to Ole Miss. Their 2015 season concluded with a 4-0 shutout loss against Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA Regional.
When the teams met last season, Robin Riethmueller earned the only MT victory in the match as the Commodores defeated the Blue Raiders 6-1. Having home court could potentially play into the hands of MT, however, as Vanderbilt was 4-5 on the road last season.
"Vandy is always a top 25 team with tons of talent and are very well coached," Borendame said. "This will be a great match, and I believe the community will come out to support us and be impressed with how hard our team competes and fights.
"We have put a lot of effort into promoting this match and are looking for a very supportive crowd," added Borendame, saying he wants the new Adams Tennis Complex to be packed with 1,000 fans.
Although the Blue Raiders have eight freshmen and two sophomores on the roster, Borendame says, "We are very young, but we are a dangerous young team that can play high level tennis. I am looking forward to our team setting the tone for what type of competitors we are going to be this season."
Live stats for the matches will be provided. The Blue Raiders are on Twitter, and they can be found at @MT_MensTennis for updates and information regarding the team.
