Simpson carries MT with 14 second-half points
NORFOLK, Va. – A second-half spark from sophomore Edward Simpson proved to be the difference for Middle Tennessee in a huge 64-61 win at Old Dominion.
The road win extended the Raiders winning streak to four games and served as the 400th career win for head coach Kermit Davis.
Darnell Harris led the Blue Raiders with 19 points and six rebounds, but Simpson turned out to be the hero of the game, scoring 14 points in the second half to tie his career high.
Middle Tennessee (12-5, 4-1 C-USA) battled Old Dominion (9-9, 2-3 C-USA) the whole way, shooting 47.1 percent from field. In a defensive contest, the Raiders held the Monarchs – the pre-season number two pick in Conference USA – to 40.4 percent from the field and 18.8 percent from three.
The Blue Raiders jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with the first five points of the contest coming from Harris.
Perrin Buford crashed the boards in a big way in the first half, totaling six rebounds at the break, including one that he turned into a putback dunk to put the Raiders on top 21-20 with 3:57 remaining in the first half.
Old Dominion went into the locker room with a two-point advantage after a buzzer beater broke the 24-24 tie.
Simpson tallied five straight points to bring the Raiders within one at the 11:58 mark. Two minutes later he dropped a fast break three in to tie the game at 45.
Simpson later continued his hot streak, hitting his third three from the left wing to put Middle up 50-46.
The Blue Raiders and Monarchs swapped baskets on the next few possessions, leaving MT with a four-point advantage entering the final media timeout.
After a couple of clutch free throws by Jacob Ivory, the Raiders hit Giddy Potts on the run-out and he slammed it home with 40 seconds left on the clock to give the Raiders a 60-54 lead.
From that point on it came down to free throws for Middle Tennessee, and it was Ivory and Simpson who sealed it for the Raiders at the line down the stretch.
Middle Tennessee returns home to face North Texas on Thursday. The Blue Raiders and Mean Green will tip at 6:30 p.m. in the Murphy Center.
