Petty scores 20 for third straight game
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Makayla Timmons' desperation 3-pointer from 35 feet out at the buzzer lifted Old Dominion to a 61-58 win against Middle Tennessee in front of 3,758 at Murphy Center Saturday night.
The Lady Monarchs (7-10, 3-2) had taken a 58-57 lead on Destinee Young's 15-footer with 12 seconds remaining, but Middle Tennessee went inside to freshman post Alex Johnson on the other end, who drew a foul and went to the line.
Johnson hit the first of two free throws to tie the score, 58-58, before Timmons' desperation heave sent Old Dominion players into a celebration at midcourt.
"I'm proud of the way our team competed. The young lady (Timmons) just stepped up and made a play. She hit a big shot to win the game on the road. You just have to tip your cap to her and move on to the next one."
Middle Tennessee (9-7, 3-2) was led by junior point guard Ty Petty who tied her season high of 20 points for the third straight game. She also dished out six assists and collected four steals. Johnson tallied 16 points and Brea Edwards finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
Sophomore Abbey Sissom had a strong all-around game, supplying solid defense on C-USA leading scorer Jennie Simms, while scoring four points, pulling a game-high six rebounds and supplying five assists. Rebecca Reuter also added four points.
The biggest difference in the game could be found in the rebounding battle. Generally a strong rebounding team, Middle Tennessee was doubled on the boards. Old Dominion pulled 40 rebounds to Middle Tennessee's 20. The Blue Raiders managed five offensive rebounds off of their 32 misses.
"You can look at the rebounding and see the biggest difference in the game," Insell said. "Our four posts combined for five rebounds and one of them had three. You can't win a game when get outrebounded like that but our young ladies battled and found a way to have a chance to win in the end."
Simms led Old Dominion with 17 points before fouling out, while Young supplied a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Timmons only made two shots but her final one was the biggest as the teams appeared destined for overtime before she delivered the buzzer beater with a hand in her face.
The nip-and-tuck affair featured four ties and five lead changes.
Middle Tennessee trailed 39-37 with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Johnson drained a 3-pointer from the corner to supply a 40-39 advantage with 1:34 remaining. Sissom followed with an open-court steal and finished with a layup to push the lead to a 42-39, and then Sissom drained a running jumper with 16 seconds to play.
Momentum seemed to shift as the Blue Raiders carried a 44-39 lead into the final quarter.
Petty's layup with 8:03 remaining provided Middle Tennessee with a 48-42 lead, but Old Dominion followed with a 6-0 run to tie the game and set the stage for a vigorous finish.
Middle Tennessee will return to action when it plays at North Texas Thursday.
