Raiders picked to finish 11th
IRVING, TEXAS – Morgan Harris was named to the preseason All-Conference USA Softball team today. The Blue Raiders' catcher hit .322 last season in 51 games, recorded six home runs, racked up 34 RBIs, and had a slugging percentage of .497.
"Preseason All C-USA is a great honor for both Morgan and our program," Head Coach Jeff Breeden said. "She had a great freshman season and was named All Conference in 2015. We are now looking for her to have an even better sophomore season in 2016. Morgan leads both on and off the field. She is a great ambassador for our university."
Harris will likely be one of the leaders on a team that finished just 22-29 in 2015, but has seen great improvement in Breeden's tenure. MT only lost three seniors from last year's team and look to improve on a 5-19 conference record from a year ago.
Middle Tennessee returns three girls who played in at least 50 of the Raiders' 51 games, including Harris, Precious Birdsong and Carlie Jenkins. Megan Griffith, Randy Cookus and Austyn Whatley all return as well having played in at least 39 games last season.
In the circle MT will look to Kelci Cheney once again as the right hander went 12-14 a year ago in 36 appearances with a 3.74 ERA. She started 24 of those appearances and surrendered 101 runs, only 72 were earned, walked 44 and struck out 77 in 134.2 innings pitched.
The Raiders are picked to finish 11th in the Conference, but will use that as motivation to make their first Conference USA tournament since joining the league for the 2014 season.
"C-USA should be a dog fight in the 2016 season," Breeden added. "There are very good coaches and teams from top to bottom in our league. We see ourselves fighting for a post season berth each and every conference series. 2016 should prove to be a great season to be a Blue Raider!"
