Four players reach double figures
DENTON, Texas – Middle Tennessee utilized a balanced scoring attack and one of its stingiest defensive efforts of the season to dispose of North Texas, 76-52, at the Super Pit Thursday.
While the Blue Raiders (10-7, 4-2) controlled the game throughout the first half, it was a sensational third-quarter run that sealed North Texas' fate. Middle Tennessee led by seven early in the third quarter when it used a 12-0 run over a 3:20 span to extend the advantage and break the game open.
Four Blue Raiders scored double figures, led by senior guard Brea Edwards' 17 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Junior Ty Petty produced another sterling effort and finished with 16 points and dished out four assists.
Sophomore Abbey Sissom finished with 12 points on the strength of 5-for-7 shooting from the field, and freshman Alex Johnson continued her breakout season with 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting. TiAnna Porter was also solid with a season-high nine points in 15 minutes off of the bench. Rebecca Reuter tallied six points and four rebounds.
"I really can't begin to explain just how very proud I am of this basketball team," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "North Texas is a very improved team and they have played every team tough so to come here and have this type of game says something about how our young ladies prepared and played."
Middle Tennessee dealt North Texas (7-9, 2-4) its worst margin of defeat. Prior to Thursday's 24-point loss to the Blue Raiders, North Texas' largest margin of defeat was 12 and it had just two double-digit losses all season. The Blue Raiders won their 13th straight against North Texas in the series.
The Blue Raiders had their best shooting game of the season. They connected on 31-of-54 shots for a 57.4 shooting percentage. As good as they were the entire game, the Blue Raiders were even better in the second half. Middle Tennessee shot a sizzling 10-for-14 for 71.4 percent in the third quarter. Believe it or not, they improved upon that to shoot an even better 77.8 percent (7-for-9) in the fourth quarter.
In all, Middle Tennessee shot 17-for-23 for an eye-popping 73.9 percent after intermission.
"At the half we talked about executing our offenses," Insell said. "We didn't just want to run our offense, we wanted to execute. That was a very impressive second half and just great, great shooting. What also impressed me was how we didn't really let up on defense or intensity even after we built a pretty good lead."
While Middle Tennessee's offense was clicking on all cylinders, its defense didn't let up in the second half as it held North Texas to 11-for-31 shooting. The Blue Raiders forced 24 turnovers and scored 31 points off of those.
Middle Tennessee will have a short turn-around before playing at Rice at 2 p.m. Saturday.
