Raiders jump for team success in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The first trip of the indoor season was a successful one for the Middle Tennessee track & field teams, earning 11 first-place finishes, while adding 30 finishers in the top-five in their respective events at the Emory Invitational.
"We have had a pretty good day," said head coach Dean Hayes. We won both high jumps and the triple jumps and I am very happy with what we have done today."
The Middle Tennesee women finished with the top spot in the team standings, scoring 129.50 points and beating rival Conference USA school Florida Atlantic (95). The Blue Raider men's team finished second with 100 points with South Carolina State earning the team title with 105 points.
For the men's squad, Jacob Patten earned first and jumped a career-best in the high jump, eclipsing 2.14 meters (7-0.25). Patten, who earned C-USA Male Field Athlete of the Week Jan. 12, nearly broke the Middle Tennessee high jump record with his bound in Birmingham. Alex Pruitt set the record in 2005, clearing 2.17 meters (7-1.5).
Vincent Okot continued MT's success in the field events, winning the triple jump in 15.49 meters (50-10), while Atsu Nyamadi earned his first victory in the shot put with a heave of 14.29 meters (46-10.75).
In the running events, the distance medley relay team of Alden Dixon, Ifiok Umoh, Eliud Rutto and Geoffry Cheruiyot earned the top spot after finishing in 10:14.55. Cheruiyot also finished the mile first in 4:13.94, tallying a meet record with his time.
On the women's side, Elizabeth Dadzie captured victory in two events for the Blue Raiders, finishing first in a track event and a field event.
Dadzie jumped a personal-best 6.12 meters (20-1) in the long jump, tallying a meet record. In the 60-meter hurdles, she raced to first in 8.52 seconds.
Continuing on the strength of the day for MT, the Blue Raider women captured first in the triple jump and high jump.
India Hammond bounded 12.13 meters (39-9.75) in the triple jump with teammate Pershawna Williams finishing second in 12.12 meters (39-9.25). In the high Jump, Barbara Vilson cleared 1.67 meters (5-5.75).
Middle Tennessee continues competition at the Vanderbilt Invitational Jan. 29-30.
