MT drops matches to two ranked teams
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Brittany Huxley moved to 3-0 in singles play on the season as Middle Tennessee competed in the ITA Kickoff Weekend, hosted by Miami (FL), on Jan. 23 and 24.
Rain delayed the start of the event, which was originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
Play began Saturday morning, when the Hurricanes defeated MT 4-0 to open up their season and the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Miami (FL), the No. 12 ranked team in the nation according to the ITA, took the doubles point and cruised to pick up wins at No. 6, No. 4, and No. 1 singles, finishing off the 4-0 sweep.
The No. 41 ranked Auburn Tigers swept No. 69 Michigan State 4-0 in the other semifinal game, setting up a matchup between the Blue Raiders and Spartans on Sunday morning.
Singles play was first in the consolation match against the Spartans. The Blue Raiders showed heart and fought hard, but couldn't come up with enough wins to force doubles play, losing 4-1.
Huxley dominated her competition at No. 2 singles, winning by a score of 6-0, 6-1. There were several tight matches that fell in favor of Michigan State, as Giulia Squadrin dropped a close match 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4. Freshman Costanza Magazzini was in the lineup for the first time this weekend, winning her first set at No. 6 singles vs. the Spartans, but her match went unfinished at 7-6, 2-2.
The 2-2 Blue Raiders are now looking ahead to facing another championship contender in No. 22 TCU in Fort Worth on Jan. 29. Staying in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, McNeese State will square off with MT on Jan. 31 in a neutral site matchup.
MT will return to the friendly confines of the Adams Tennis Complex on Feb. 4 vs. Chattanooga. The new facility will be home to the Conference USA Championships on April 21-24.
