Standout averaged 19.5 points in two wins
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Alex Johnson has become a force in the paint for the Middle Tennessee women's basketball team.
The Blue Raider standout captured her fourth C-USA Freshman of the Week honor Monday after averaging 19.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, shooting 62 percent from the field and 77 percent from the free-throw line in two Middle Tennessee road wins.
"This is a very deserving honor for Alex Johnson," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "She had two big games on the road for us. She has become such big part of what we are doing. Alex has worked hard and continues to improve. We are very pleased her progress."
Johnson has been a contributor all season; however, her game has elevated since C-USA play started. Overall, Johnson is averaging 9.9 points and 3.1 rebounds. In C-USA only games only, she is averaging 14.9 points, which is second on the team.
During the previous five games, Johnson's play has been even greater. During that span she is averaging a team-high 17.8 points and 3.4 rebounds, while shooting 54 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free-throw line.
"I am playing with more confidence, and I think a big reason for that is the team believes in me," Johnson said. "I work hard to get open inside and they have trusted me by getting me the basketball. Fortunately, I have been able to contribute and help our team. My teammates and coaches have been great in helping me make this transition from high school to college."
Johnson came up huge in Middle Tennessee's 61-60 win at Rice Saturday. The Murfreesboro native poured in a career-high 25 points and connected on 13-of-16 free throws. The 13 free throws made are the 11th most in a single game in school history. At one point against Rice, Johnson had scored 23 of Middle Tennessee's 46 points. She scored 10 consecutive points and 12 of 15 during one stretch of the third quarter of the tightly-contested league matchup.
She was equally impressive in the win at North Texas Thursday. Johnson scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field in the road victory.
Johnson's play helped Middle Tennessee win its third straight conference road game and secure its fourth win in five games overall.
The Blue Raiders have a big conference homestand this week. They welcome Marshall Thursday, before playing host to rival WKU Saturday.
