Freshman Wins Male Tennis Athlete of the Week
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee freshman Ayed Zatar Cordero was honored with his first Conference USA Male Tennis Athlete of the Week award for his efforts against Vanderbilt last week, as announced by C-USA on Tuesday.
The Asuncion, Paraguay native compiled a 1-0 record in singles play over the last week, winning 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot in the lineup vs. Kris Yee of the No. 25 ranked Commodores. With that win he improved to 2-0 on the season in singles play, winning in the only two opportunities he's been given. He started the season off with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 spot against UTC's Paul LaHue.
In the Vanderbilt match, Cordero proved to be ready for the competition by jumping out to a 6-3 first set win. Yee took the second set by a score of 6-0, forcing a third set. The final set went back and forth in the early stages, but Cordero got on a roll with his serve and volley.
With all other matches done, the crowd all had their eyes on Cordero and Yee at No. 5. Cordero did not disappoint, winning the third set 6-3 and giving the Blue Raiders their only point of the match.
Cordero is 1-1 in doubles action on the year, as he teamed up with Robin Riethmueller at the No. 3 doubles spot for both matches.
The 6-foot-7 freshman has anchored the bottom of the lineup for MT early on in the 2016 campaign and continues to prove that he'll be tough to beat in the matches to come.
Cordero and his Blue Raiders will be back in action on the road for the first time all year, travelling to play George Washington on Jan. 28 and Penn on Jan. 30. MT returns home on Feb. 3 to face the Louisville Cardinals at 3:30 p.m. at the Adams Tennis Complex. There will be free admission and free food at the match.
