Tale of Two Halves: MT Falls at UAB, 78-67

MT could not hang on to 12-point halftime lead
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee men's basketball team led by 12 at halftime but ended up falling to UAB, 78-67, on Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
Reggie Upshaw paced the Blue Raiders (8-5, 0-1 C-USA) for the second straight game with 21 points, 15 of which came in the first half. Darnell Harris poured in 11 first-half points and ended with 16.
Nick Norton and Robert Brown each had 14 points to lead UAB (11-3, 1-0 C-USA).
Middle Tennessee turned in its finest first half of the season shooting 66.7 percent from the field (14-of-21) and 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from deep. The defense also held UAB to 48 percent (12-of-25) shooting during the opening 20 minutes and MT had a 15-7 edge in team rebounds.
The Blazers flipped the script during the second stanza as the Blue Raiders shot just 20 percent (6-of-30) from the field and 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from beyond the arc.
Upshaw got the MT offense going with a powerful slam on the Blue Raiders' first possession and then hit a three two minutes later. The junior's triple was part of a 4-for-4 start from beyond the arc for the visitors, helping MT to a 14-9 lead through the opening five minutes.
Later in the half, Upshaw knocked in a pair of free throws as part of a 13-2 MT stretch to put his team in front by nine with 7:10 to go in the first half.
The lead continued to swell as the Blue Raiders stole a pass with just seconds left in the opening frame and Upshaw ran the floor to convert a layup on the other end to give MT a, 42-30, halftime lead.
MT made just one of its first eight shots to open the second stanza, allowing the Blazers to open on a 20-8 run to tie the game at 50 with just over 10 minutes to play.
Jaqawn Raymond finally got MT out of its funk with a triple and then Habersham drained three of his career-high nine points to give the Blue Raiders a one-point lead at the 8:34 mark.
MT went up by four after a Quavius Copeland driving layup, but 19 MT second-half fouls proved too difficult to overcome.
The Blazers made 23-of-28 from the free throw line during the second half and walked away with an 11-point victory.
The Blue Raiders will return to action at home against UTEP on Thursday, Jan. 7. Tip-off for that game will be at 6 p.m.
