MT turns back UTSA on road
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Poise and resiliency were evident as Middle Tennessee overcame foul trouble and an injury to leading scorer Brea Edwards to secure a 74-63 clutch road win at UTSA Saturday afternoon.
Edwards suffered an injury to her chin in the second quarter and had to receive stitches that kept her from the game until the fourth quarter. Edwards impacted the game upon her return as she scored 11 of her 14 in the final quarter.
It was a total team effort as Ty Petty led the way with 20 points and six assists with just one turnover. Freshman standout Alex Johnson continued her outstanding breakout season with 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting and a team-best six rebounds. Edwards finished with 14 points and four rebounds. Every player who played scored for Middle Tennessee.
The Blue Raiders improved to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in C-USA with the clutch road victory. The Blue Raiders aided their cause with an 18-for-22 effort from the free-throw line, including knocking down six-for-six in the final 1:01 to seal the win. Middle Tennessee was 9-for-10 from the charity stripe in the final quarter.
"I am extremely pleased with our basketball team," Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We really needed this road win against a tough UTSA team. The young ladies responded. We had great leadership. We battled on the boards. We competed. We showed great poise when they cut it to five in the fourth quarter. We overcame not having our leading scorer for a large portion of the game. I am really, really happy with this performance today."
Middle Tennessee continued its improved shooting with a 47 percent effort from the field on 24-for-51 shooting. The Blue Raiders shot 50 percent (8-for-16) from 3-point range and they connected on 82 percent from the free-throw line.
The Blue Raiders led wire-to-wire but it was a battle. UTSA (5-9, 1-3) cut a double-figure deficit to five, 58-53, with 5:25 remaining, but Johnson came back with a nice spin move and layup, and Edwards scored six straight, including a back-breaking 3-pointer, to ice the game for the Blue Raiders.
Caroline Warden saw her most extensive action of the season with 28 minutes and played well. When Edwards was out in the second, Warden and Abbey Sissom had some clutch baskets to help keep the team in the lead.
Middle Tennessee will return to action when it faces Charlotte Thursday at Murphy Center.
