10/14/2016 9:13:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee came up just short of forcing overtime against Rice, holding even with the Owls until an 86th minute winner gave Rice the 2-1 win.
Sophomore keeper Celeste Barnard logged eight saves on the evening, matching a single-game high for all Blue Raider goalkeepers on the season.
Despite suffering a 2-1 loss, Middle Tennessee was strong in defense, allowing just the two goals off of 11 attempts on frame and 23 total shots by the Owls.
It was nearly 12 minutes in before Rice finally logged the first shot on goal Friday night but just seven minutes later the Owls took a 1-0 advantage when a long cross in from the right side was volleyed into the net by Darcy Mickalow.
Courteney Gibson logged the first shot on goal for the Blue Raiders almost immediately following the Rice goal in the 20th minute.
Middle Tennessee was unable to get another shot on frame until the 39th minute when Salera Jordan played a ball across the face of the goal that fell to Kerri Cook at the far post for a Blue Raider equalizer.
Rice opened up the second half with a shot on goal inside the first minute of the half, but Barnard stood strong between the posts collecting her third save of the match.
Rice controlled possession for much of the second half, keeping MT from taking a shot throughout the 45-minute period, but the Raider defense was able to keep Rice off the board heading into the final 10 minutes as well.
In the 82nd minute, Barnard pulled in save number seven on the evening before logging an eighth in the 86th minute to set a new career high, but Rice was able to grab the game winner just seconds later off of the rebound.
Middle Tennessee concludes its home schedule with Senior Day on Sunday when they host UTEP in a 2:00 p.m. match at Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
