Middle Tennessee heads to Charlotte to cap weekend
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. —Middle Tennessee offered two of its best sets of the season Friday night in AMG, but the Blue Raiders fell short in C-USA action against UTSA 3-1.
Regan Coughlin paced the Raiders (4-17, 1-6) with 10 kills and a season-high five blocks. Bailey Mason added six kills and tied her season-high with three service aces.
Vonnie Covington recorded three kills along with tying a season-best four total blocks. As a team, the Raiders matched a season-best with eight total blocks.
Jacqueline Lux dished out 23 assists on the night while surpassing the 800-assist career mark.
"I thought that was a great team we played against. Set two was probably our best set of the season. I think more than that, even though the last two sets didn't go the way we wanted them to physically, I thought our kids hung in there mentally. We tried to make adjustments, and they didn't quit," interim head coach Jeff Huebner said. "I feel as if we have made a lot of progress. We looked a lot better tonight. I'm encouraged and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."
The Raiders and Roadrunners traded points to open the first set, until UTSA broke a 14-14 tie to hold a 16-14 lead. The Raiders answered with a kill from Delaney Gallagher along with a block by Mason and Gallagher to trim the deficit, but the Roadrunners closed the match on 6-2 run to strike first on the board.
Middle Tennessee responded in the second set with one of its best performances of the season. Tied 4-4, the Raiders pulled away with a 4-0 run highlighted by a kill from Mason and Makila York. The Raiders used that momentum to extend the lead to 16-8 behind kill from York and a timely block from Coughlin and Vonnie Covington. Kills from Covington, Coughlin and Gallagher down the stretch gave MT its biggest lead of the night at 21-11. UTSA attempted a late-set rally with a 4-0 run, but Mason's timely kill gave the Raiders a 25-19 set win to get on the scoreboard. As a team, the Raiders hit at a .222 clip in the second frame.
The Roadrunners answered out of intermission with a quick 3-1 lead in the third set that grew to 13-3. UTSA hit for a match-high .421 and took advantage of eight Raiders errors to surge to a 25-13 third-set win.
UTSA kept its momentum rolling in the fourth set to jump ahead 10-6. The Raiders offered a pair of rallies, but the Roadrunner offense struck one final time to close the last set on a 15-5 run and take the match.
Dajana Boskovic led the Roadrunners (13-4, 4-1) with 11 kills and added seven blocks. UTSA tallied 12 team blocks on the evening while hitting at a .216 clip offensively.
