MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team competed in another fall game on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Raiders hosted Cleveland State and smoked the Cougars 18-2 in 10 innings of action.
Gretchen Greer got the start in the circle, recording eight strikeouts in four innings of action. Cori Jennings, Pattie Ruth Taylor and Sarah Pinkston also saw time in the circle, racking up another five strikeouts between them.
The Blue Raiders had two big innings in the game, the second and the ninth. In the second, MT scored five runs all with two outs. In the inning, Payton Grove ripped a shot to right center for a triple and then scored by stealing home.
Several other Blue Raiders had big hits in the game as well. None bigger than Kirstyn Cuccia's home run shot in the bottom of the fourth. Her solo shot went down the right field line and off the top of the foul pole. At the time it gave the home side a 9-0 advantage.
The Middle Tennessee freshman came to play in the game, recording much of the other MT big hits in the contest. Summer Burgess launched a triple in the third inning and a huge double in the ninth on her way to recording four hits, two RBI and four runs scored on the day. She also had a good defensive day, recording a rolling and diving stop at shortstop to throw out a runner at first.
Keely McGee and Lexi Cushing also had monster hits in the game. McGee recorded a triple in the bottom of the sixth and was just inches away from a grand slam in the top of the ninth, instead she ended up with a bases clearing double to center field. Cushing hit the fence as well, also recording a double in the game. She finished the game with three hits and three RBI. McGee ended with two hits, four runs scored and three RBI.
