Seven to represent MT in the Ohio Valley Regional
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee men's tennis will hit the courts again this weekend for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Ohio Valley Regional in Knoxville, Tennessee, hosted by Tennessee Oct. 20-24.
Luis Morillo Diaz leads the squad in singles wins at the midway point of the fall season, as the sophomore from Spain holds a perfect 6-0 record. With two wins over opponents from top-75 ranked teams at the ITA All-Americans, Ayed Zatar Cordero will compete in singles at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals, as well as doubles with Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore.
Morell is searching for his first singles victory of his sophomore campaign, and he teamed up with Zatar at the ITA All-Americans for a close loss against No. 39 Washington, 7-6, 7-6.
Hitting the courts for his second event of the fall will be Gian Issa, who earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over South Dakota State's Elliot Ward at the ITA All-Americans.
MT head coach Jimmy Borendame's three freshmen will all compete in their third event of the fall when the Blue Raiders travel to Knoxville. Max Rauch has posted a 2-2 singles mark, while Nicolas Buitrago Machado's record sits at 3-3. Tom Moonen boasts a 4-1 mark in singles through two events. Rauch and Moonen will also compete as a doubles combo this weekend.
"All three of our freshmen are doing the right things in the classroom and on the court, and I'm hoping they'll get pushed again this weekend so their game will keep improving," Borendame said.
The Ohio Valley Region is consistently one of the nation's best regions, with teams from the SEC, Big Ten and ACC represented, along with local foes such as Belmont, Lipscomb and WKU.
"Our region is loaded with the likes of Kentucky, Indiana, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Louisville and East Tennessee State," Borendame added. "There's also a number of guys ranked in the top-50 in singles and doubles nationally. This is a great chance for our guys to compete with these tough opponents."
