Nishimoto scores twice as Van Ishoven logs two assists
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee battled back from two goals down in the second half to force two overtimes against FIU on Sunday before dropping a heartbreaker, 3-2, in the 103rd minute.
Middle logged 19 total shots in the contest to just nine FIU attempts while shots on goal were even 6-6.
Haley Nishimoto notched both goals for the Blue Raiders, marking the first multi-goal game of her career, with both goals assisted by Charlotte Van Ishoven.
Angie Lai had the first shot on goal on the day, forcing the FIU keeper into action in the fourth minute.
FIU opened up the scoring soon after when a Panther shot went off the crossbar and deflected off of Bria Williams into the back of the net.
Lai put a shot on frame once more in the first 45 minutes, but the Blue Raiders went into the locker room trailing the Panthers by a goal with each team having five shots in the opening frame.
FIU didn't waste any time getting things started in the second half as they extended their lead to 2-0 in the 49th minute as leading goal scorer Alyssa Robinson beat Sydney Chalcraft on the near post.
Middle Tennessee answered with an offensive streak that saw the Raiders take six shots in the next ten minutes.
The fifth shot of the sequence was a rocket by Charlotte Van Ishoven that deflected off the crossbar and right to the feet of Nishimoto who buried it into the back of the net to draw MT back within one.
After pushing for an equalizer for much of the ensuing action, Middle found it in the 83rd minute as Van Ishoven found Nishimoto in the 6-yard box for a tap in to level the score.
MT had a late chance to avoid overtime with a corner in the 90th minute but was unable to convert the chance, sending the match beyond regulation.
The Raiders looked very dangerous in the opening minutes of overtime, working into the 18-yard box a number of times with three shots in the first four minutes.
An Amber Hoot free kick from 30 yards out narrowly missed the top corner in the 94th minute, but MT continued to control possession in the first overtime period.
MT earned another free kick late in the first overtime but failed to get a shot on frame after a cross into the 6-yard box.
It was less than three minutes into the second overtime period when FIU was able to get some momentum going and quickly turned a throw in into a shot from inside the 6-yard box that squeaked past Chalcraft and the Blue Raider defense to seal the win for the Panthers.
