Game 1 Box
MURFREESBORO, Tenn.— It was a tale of two games in Game 1 of the Blue-White World Series, as the Blue team came away with the 7-5 victory Friday afternoon at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The offense was abundant early and often, as all 12 runs were scored in the first three innings. The scoring spree started when senior Brad Jarreau crushed the third pitch of the game for a home run to left field. Jarreau added another homer in the third inning, as Blue cranked four home runs in the game.
White answered in the bottom of the first with three runs of its own thanks to back-to-back singles from Devin Conn and Drew Huff to lead off the inning. Newcomer Ryan Kemp pulled an RBI-double down the left field line, scoring Conn. After a balk to score Huff, Kaleb King flew out, scoring Kemp on a sacrifice fly.
Blue responded in the second with a solo shot from starting pitcher AJ Spencer, followed by Jarreau's two-run shot later in the inning to take the 4-3 lead.
White battled back with a two-out RBI-triple down the left field line from freshman Aaron Antonini, sparking a two-out rally to take the 5-4 after two innings.
Phillip Kunsa blasted the deciding three-run homer to left field in the top of the third to put Blue ahead 7-5.
The scoring came to a screeching halt after the third inning. Starting pitcher AJ Spencer settled in after giving up a few runs early, throwing five innings, allowing five runs on five hits, and four strikeouts while picking up the win for Blue. Sophomore transfer Tyler Holcombe relieved Spencer in the six, throwing an efficient two innings to pick up the save.
Reid Clements pitched an outstanding four innings for White in relief of sophomore Carson Lester. Clements only allowed one hit, while striking out seven.
Head Coach Jim McGuire was very pleased with the relief efforts of Holcombe and Clements.
"The two relievers were outstanding" McGuire said. "Holcombe was really good in relief and then Clements had seven strikeouts in four innings which was really impressive."
Conn and Jarreau both finished 2-for-3 on the game, as the only Blue Raiders with multiple hits in the game.
Two southpaws will get the start in Game 2, Jake Wyrick for Blue and Cody Puckett on the mound for White. First pitch is set for tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
