Blue Raiders close weekend against UAB
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Jacqueline Lux met the 1,000 digs career mark in a hard-fought match Friday night in Alumni Memorial Gym, but the visiting Southern Miss Golden Eagles used enough offense to leave with a 3-0 win.
After switching from libero to setter in the offseason, the junior captain Lux has been a cornerstone piece for the Blue Raiders since her freshman campaign.
"She has done a phenomenal job during her time here for us. That's something you can't understate," interim coach Jeff Huebner said. "It was a tough two years the past couple years, and for her to achieve that record with the position change speaks to her commitment to her excellence over time."
The Shelbyville, Ind. native is also 66 assists away from the 1,000 assist career mark.
"I'm very excited about it. I'm not libero anymore, so being the setter and reaching 1,000 digs and hopefully reaching 1,000 assists soon, that's rare, so it's exciting," Lux said.
Bailey Mason led the Blue Raider charge with 10 kills and added a pair of blocks. Regan Coughlin tallied eight kills, while Makila York recorded seven kills and hit at a .538 clip.
Lux finished the night with 27 assists, four digs and two blocks.
The Blue Raiders and Golden Eagles swapped the first few points of the opening set before USM built a 14-7 lead. The Blue Raiders turned on the offense with kills York and Coughlin to trim the deficit to 14-12. USM answered by taking 11 of the next 15 points for a 25-16 set win.
Southern Miss used the opening-set win to jump ahead to a 6-2 lead to open the second. MT closed the gap by forcing a handful of errors to get within a point at 9-8. Southern Miss found another offensive run to extend the lead to 15-9. Following a Blue Raider timeout, MT forced a pair of errors and used a block by Vonnie Covington and Mason to cut the deficit to 16-14. The two squads traded points down the stretch of the set, but USM claimed a 25-22 win to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Blue Raiders showed a strong effort in the final frame, tallying 13 kills and hitting at a .286 clip. The Raiders began the set with a 9-2 lead behind kills from Coughlin and York. USM edged its way back into the set with an offensive surge, and took its first lead of the set at 15-14. Kylie Grandy and Catherine Repsher recorded kills to extend the Golden Eagle lead to 20-15. The Blue Raiders offered one final rally behind a trio of kills from Mason, but Southern Miss capped the set with a 25-22 win to claim the match.
Grandy led USM with 14 kills and six digs, while Repsher tallied 12 kills.
"(Southern Miss) is a really good volleyball team. They are a top-3 team in the conference and lead the conference in hitting efficiency," Huebner said. "For us, it was really about being able to close out and play point-by-point. I think it's a really encouraging match for us."
The Blue Raiders close the weekend with a home match against UAB. Sunday's action is slated for a 1 p.m. first serve from AMG.
