Blue Raiders drop weekend finale to UAB
10/23/2016 4:02:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee provided one of its stronger offensive outings of the season Sunday afternoon in AMG, but the effort fell short as UAB claimed a 3-1 win.
Regan Coughlin tallied a match-high 15 kills, while Makila York added 10 kills. Vonnie Covington finished the day with eight kills and a team-best .400 hitting percentage.
The Blue Raiders opened the match with a fast start behind kills from Bailey Mason and Coughlin. York, who has averaged 10 kills per match over the last four matches, added a pair of kills to the run to give MT an early 8-2 lead. The Blazers responded offensively and trimmed the deficit 14-13. MT cushioned its lead with kills from Covington and York, but UAB answered to tie the set 21-21. The Blazers used the late-set momentum to take four of the last six points of the set to win 25-23.
The Raiders and Blazers swapped points for the majority of the second set before the Raiders evened the score. Tied 20-20, a kill from Coughlin gave the Raiders the lead, and three Blazer errors provided MT set point at 24-22. Covington tallied another kill to close the set and even the match score 1-1. The Blue Raiders tallied 13 kills to just four errors in the frame, and hit for a combined .351 in the first two sets.
The Raiders built a quick 7-3 lead to open the third set with a pair of kills from Delaney Gallagher and a kill by Aubrie Huddleston. The Blazers answered to even the set at 7-7. MT and UAB matched point-for-point down the stretch of the set until the Blazers claimed a 19-18 lead. UAB took advantage of a pair of MT errors late, and used a 6-1 run to close the set at 25-19.
The Blazers used the two-set lead heading into the final frame. The two teams traded points to begin the set until UAB broke a 5-5 tie and extended the lead to 12-10. The Blazers found its offensive rhythm down the stretch of the set with a 13-4 run to claim the set 25-14 and win the match.
Erika Zembyla led the Blazers (11-14, 3-6) with 15 kills, while as a team UAB tallied 10 total blocks.
The Blue Raiders return to action next Sunday as they close a four-match homestand against UTEP at 1 p.m.
