Zehnder wins Flight B Singles Title
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The ITA Ohio Valley Regional presented by Oracle came to a close Monday at the Adams Tennis Complex, as Maria Josefina Zehnder took home the Flight B Singles championship.
"The facility showed itself off this weekend, and we were glad to host such a big tournament," Middle Tennessee women's tennis head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "I thought the event was run well, and I was glad our girls were able to play some more matches against tough competition."
Zehnder was the fourth seeded player in the Flight B Singles draw, but cruised through the first and second rounds against opponents from SEMO and UT-Martin. WKU's Violetta Shatalova met Zehnder in the quarterfinals, where Zehnder dominated the match, winning 6-1, 6-2.
Oleksandra Doroshenko of SEMO, ranked No. 2 in the Flight B Singles draw, took on Zehnder in the semifinals, losing that match by a narrow margin, 6-4, 6-4, to send Zehnder to the finals. Zehnder earned the victory, 6-0, 6-1, in the finals over EKU's Putri Dwinta.
In the Qualifying Singles draw, freshman Lidia Burrows made her debut for the Blue Raiders, winning twice to advance to the Main Draw Singles. Burrows earned victories over foes from Wright State and Cincinnati in three sets move on in the event. Once in the Main Draw, Burrows lost in a third set tiebreak to Nelli Ponomoreva of Miami (OH).
Luisa Zirilli was one win shy of an appearance in the Main Draw Singles after winning 6-4, 6-1 in the first round against Evansville's Chieko Yamada. Marta Peris Herrero took her first round Qualifying Singles match to three sets before losing to Miami-Ohio's Anzhelika Shapovalova, who advanced through the Qualifying and Main Draw Singles to the quarterfinal round. Peris was 2-0 in consolation singles matches, defeating opponents from Lipscomb and ETSU.
Newcomer Holly Horsfall went 1-2 on the weekend, taking down Northern Kentucky's Danielle Donahue by a score of 7-5, 7-5 in Saturday consolation action. Kentucky's Lesedi Jacobs defeated Alory Pereira in the first round of the Main Draw, but Pereira bounced back with a 6-3, 6-2 consolation triumph over Haily Morgan of Wright State.
Sarah Sediri's first round Main Draw Singles match went to three sets, but Northern Kentucky's Margita Sunjic advanced to the next round. In Saturday consolation action, Sediri dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Ball State's Julia Sbireca.
In her second fall as a Blue Raider, Costanza Magazzini advanced to the second round of the Main Draw Singles after taking a decisive 6-4, 6-0 victory over Audrey Berger of Ball State. Magazzini fell to Tennessee's Eve Repic, ranked No. 5 in the Ohio Valley Region, in the second round.
One event remains in the fall season for Ramsay's squad, as the Blue Raiders will compete in the Georgia State Hidden Dual this weekend.
