Raiders have solid 6th place finish
FINAL RESULTS
VERO BEACH, FL – Middle Tennessee shot a 5-under par 283 in the final round of the 2016 Quail Valley Intercollegiate to finish sixth overall while freshman Ilari Saulo earned co-medalist honors with a score of 13-under. The tournament was held at the Quail Valley Golf Club (par 72, 7,350 yards).
Saulo, who matched the third best score in Blue Raider history yesterday with a 65, birdied two of his final three holes to tie Phillip Knowles of North Florida. Saulo finished with a 71 and led the field with 19 birdies and an eagle.
Saulo's 54-hole total of 203 matched the best three-round score in school history with Kent Bulle (2007) and Brett Patterson (2013). Saulo is also the first medalist or co-medalist winner at Middle Tennessee since Hunter Green won the 2012 Argent Financial Classic.
"I am very proud of Ilari," said Head Coach Brennan Webb. "To come in as a freshman and win against a field this strong is a tremendous statement. Along with Joey (Savoie), the two of them have led us this semester and that continued to be the case this week. We were one score a day from having a chance to be at the top of the leaderboard. But I am very pleased with this solid finish against a very strong and competitive field."
As a team, the Blue Raiders finished with an 852 total to finish in front of No. 30 Kansas, No. 54 North Texas and No. 57 Ohio State.
Senior Joey Savoie grabbed his second top 10 of the fall by coming in a tie for seventh with a 210 total. Savoie turned in a 5-under par 67 on Tuesday to match the second-best score of the day. He had 15 total birdies to tie for fourth in the field.
Sophomore James Beckner tied for 28th with a solid even par 216. Beckner carded a 72 in the final round.
Freshman Chip Thomas turned in a 73 for a 224 total and finished tied for 59th, while Connor Slane tied for 61st with a 225. Slane also had a 73 in the final round.
The Blue Raiders will now be off until the spring season begins on Feb. 19 at the Puerto Rico Classic.
