Game 4 Box
MURFREESBORO, Tenn.— Head Coach Jim McGuire said he wanted an evenly matched series when the teams were divided for the annual Blue-White World Series.
The head ball coach is getting a tightly contested series to say the least, as the teams tied for the second straight game, this time 5-5, in Game 4 at Reese Smith Jr. Field Friday afternoon.
"It really has been evenly matched, other than Game 2," said McGuire. "The rest of the games have been tight all the way through and that's what you're trying to create, good competition with two equal teams."
With the tie, Blue improves to 2-0-2 and clinches the series.
In all four contests Blue has scored first, putting up a two runs in the top of the first inning. Seniors Brad Jarreau and Chaz Vesser started off the inning with back-to-back singles. Senior Riley Delgado scored Jarreau with a sacrifice fly to right field, for one of his two RBI in the game. Later in the inning sophomore Blake Benefield chopped a RBI-single up the middle to put Blue up 2-0.
White answered in the top of the second, as Manuel Lopez smacked an RBI-single to the shortstop, scoring Devin Conn. The White squad added another run in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.
The teams were locked at 2-2 heading into the seventh before freshman Alex Carignan sparked a two-out rally for Blue, smacking an RBI-single to center to take the 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Carignan scored on a wild pitch to go up 4-2. Delgado kept the scoring going with an RBI-double to left field, raising his batting average to .455 in the series.
Down 5-3 in the top of the ninth, White battled back with a rally of its own. Senior Kaleb King roped a two-run single to left center to knot the game up at 5-5. The game was then called in the bottom of the ninth due to a time limit.
Drew Huff has been unstoppable from the plate for the White squad, boasting a .583 batting average, along with a .667 on-base percentage. He continued his hot streak today, going 3-for-3 while scoring a run.
Freshman Aaron Antonini was also big for White, going 3-for-4 on the day, increasing his series average to .455.
Six different Blue Raiders compiled multi-hit games as the teams combined for 22 hits. Eight different players are hitting over .300 for the series.
Sophomore transfer Tyler Holcombe will get the Game 5 start for Blue, while Cody Puckett will start his second game of the series on the mound for White. Tomorrow is Family Day at Reese Smith Jr. Field. First pitch set for 1 p.m.
