Team faces Coastal Georgia at 2 PM
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee women's basketball will play its first of two exhibition games when it faces Coastal Georgia at Murphy Center Sunday at 2 p.m.
While the game serves as a dress rehearsal for the upcoming 2016-17 campaign, Head Coach Rick Insell said it will be business as usual for the Blue Raiders.
"We have to use these exhibition games to evaluate players in game situations," Insell said. "We are always trying to create those situations in practice but these opportunities allow you to see your players execute your offenses, execute defensively and how they get up and down the floor. The (exhibition) games may not count on the record but we take them seriously because of what we are trying to get out of them."
Although Coastal Georgia already has one game under its belt, Insell said there is no scouting the opponent.
"We are only worried about us," Insell said. "In these games I am more about our chemistry, our execution and what kind of shape we are in. We still have about 10 days from the first exhibition game before we play (the season opener) at Virginia but we have a lot to work on during that time."
Based on practice and production it appears four players have locked themselves into starting roles. Senior Ty Petty and junior Abbey Sissom will start on the perimeter, and Insell projects sophomore Alex Johnson and junior Gabby Lyon to start in the post.
The fifth spot; however, is up for grabs.
"Alex Johnson is kind of our anchor right now and it would matter not, you could go with either Gabby or (Rebecca Reuter) opposite Alex," Insell said. "Right now Becca would probably be the first sub for either Alex or Gabby, and then you have Jordan Majors and Charity Savage. We have five young ladies who are doing well as the post positions.
"Ty and Abbey are on the perimeter but they can't play the whole game. Somebody has to play the other slot. Those two (Petty and Sissom) are going to get a lot of minutes. As far as that fifth starter, we have three young ladies vying for that position and it is going to come down to who can defend. We have to be able to defend."
