MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After meeting the 1,000 digs mark earlier this season, junior Jacqueline Lux eclipsed 1,000 career assists in a tough 3-0 setback against UTEP in Alumni Memorial Gym Sunday afternoon.
Dora Peonia led the Blue Raider offense with 10 kills, while Aubrie Huddleston and Makila York each added eight kills. Huddleston also hit for a team-best .353 in the match and pitched in a career-high four service aces in the effort.
Lux finished the day with 27 assists and six digs.
The Miners jumped ahead early to start the match with a 5-1 lead. Three kills from York answered the run and cut the deficit to 6-5. UTEP picked up the offense once more with kills from Tatum Winter and Macey Austin to extend the Miner lead to 12-6. MT offered another rally when Vonnie Covington and Peonia tallied kills to inch closer at 12-9, but UTEP's offense surged down the stretch. The Miners silenced the run and took 13 of the next 19 points for a 25-15 set win to get on the board first.
Middle Tennessee and UTEP traded the first few points of the second set before MT provided its best run of the day. Trailing 6-4, a kill and an ace from Huddleston followed by a kill from Peonia and Miner errors placed the Raiders in control at 10-7. Out of a timeout, the Miners answered each ensuing MT point until UTEP used a pair of Raider errors to tie the set 15-15. Both teams swapped points down the stretch when a UTEP attack error gave MT set point at 24-23. The Miners responded with a kill from Lindsey Larson that evened the set once more and sparked another UTEP run. The Miners claimed four of the next five points to take the second set 27-25 heading in to intermission.
Out of the break, UTEP continued to strike offensively and built a quick 5-1 lead. MT responded with a Huddleston kill and ace to close the gap. UTEP then pushed its advantage 12-7 before the Raiders offered a final rally. A pair of Huddleston kills along with a Miner error trimmed the deficit to 13-11, but UTEP answered as its offense surged to a 25-17 set win to claim the match.
Ashley Grzebeniak led UTEP (6-20, 3-8) with nine kills, while Brianna Arellano added eight kills. Tatum led the Miners defensively with six assisted blocks.
