One fall event remains
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Miguel Negre Fernandez and Jacob Pugh led the way for the Middle Tennessee men's tennis team this weekend, winning three singles matches apiece at the Commodore Scramble, hosted by Vanderbilt.
Pugh's first win of the event came on Friday against Thias Minet of Lipscomb by a score of 6-3, 6-4, followed by a victory over Belmont's Gibson Parker that afternoon, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). That momentum carried over to Saturday morning singles action, as Pugh bested Lipscomb's George Wong in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Negre also got off to a great start this weekend, dominating his opening match against Wong, 6-1, 6-2. Jorge Alfonzo from Tennessee Tech got the best of Negre in a third set tiebreak Friday afternoon. Negre bounced back Saturday for a win over Belmont's Parker by a score of 6-1, 6-2, followed by a victory against Caio Niel of the Bruins, 6-0, 6-2.
After dropping his match to No. 60 Cameron Klinger of Vanderbilt, Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore earned wins over Louisville's Parker Wynn and Alex Ross from Vanderbilt in straight sets. Klinger was named a Co-Champion of the singles event after competition was complete Sunday afternoon.
Gian Issa's first triumph of the weekend came against Niel of Belmont, when the junior blanked his opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Issa also earned a singles victory for the Blue Raiders in his final match of the event, defeating Lipscomb's Philippe Courteau.
In doubles action, Issa and Negre notched a 2-2 mark on the weekend, taking down opponents from Lipscomb and Vanderbilt. Lipscomb's Courteau and Victor Chaw fell to Morell and Pugh in doubles on the opening day of the event.
The CCB Collegiate Invitational is the lone event remaining for the Blue Raiders in the fall season. Action in that tournament will get underway Friday in Birmingham, Alabama.
