MT looks forward to spring season
ATLANTA - Some of the top talent in women's collegiate tennis gathered in Atlanta this weekend for the Georgia State Hidden Dual, where Middle Tennessee took on Furman, Oregon and Georgia State.
Georgia State ended the spring 2016 season with an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranking of No. 48. Oregon followed closely behind at No. 58.
MT took the court against Furman in doubles Friday, winning two of the four matches. Sarah Sediri and Maria Josefina Zehnder notched a 6-4 victory, while Lidia Burrows and Marta Peris Herrero cruised to a 6-1 triumph.
In Friday singles action, Oregon swept the Blue Raiders in six singles matches, but MT battled through several of those matches. Alory Pereira took her match to a tiebreak in the first set, but Oregon's Alyssa Tobita won the tiebreak and the second set to make the score 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Luisa Zirilli dropped her first set 6-3 and tried to force a third set, but Daniela Nasser also came away with the second set by a score of 7-5.
Burrows and Peris won again in doubles Saturday, defeating a duo from Georgia State by a score of 6-3. Holly Horsfall teamed up with Zirilli to earn a dominant 6-1 win.
Burrows delivered a victory in an eight-game pro set against Furman in Saturday singles play, but the Paladins swept spots one through six in the lineup. Both Peris and Sediri jumped out to early leads by winning their first sets, but their opponents from Furman completed the comeback by winning sets two and three.
MT took three out of seven singles matches against Georgia State Sunday, including a three set win from Pereira. Burrows and Horsfall tacked on straight set victories at the bottom of the lineup, giving MT their second and third singles wins of the final day of competition.
The Blue Raiders have now completed the fall season and will be looking forward to a short offseason before the spring dual match season begins Jan. 15, when MT hosts Lipscomb and Belmont at the Adams Tennis Complex.
