Morell finishes in Qualifying Consolation
TULSA, Okla. – Middle Tennessee was represented at the ITA All-Americans by six Blue Raiders, as Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore was last to finish in the qualifying consolation round Tuesday.
Max Rauch, Gian Issa and Tom Moonen were defeated in the opening round of the Pre-Qualifying tournament, but all were locked in close matches. Rauch took his opening set of the event in a tiebreaker, but lost by a narrow margin in the second and third sets. Issa came back from dropping his first set to send his second set to a tiebreaker before falling. After jumping out to a lead in his match by winning the first set, Moonen lost sets two and three.
Moving on to the second round for the Blue Raiders was Miguel Negre Fernandez, who took down North Carolina's Bo Boyden in the first round by a score of 6-2, 6-4. After taking down Tennessee's Steven Karl and Colin Markes from Texas, Negre's weekend ended with a loss to Michael Weindl from ODU in three sets.
After receiving an opening round bye, Ayed Zatar Cordero picked up two wins in the Pre-Qualifying tournament. Eddie Stoica from Wichita State fell to the Asuncion, Paraguay, native in the second round, and Zatar kept that momentum going in the third round against Virginia Tech's Mitch Harper, winning in three sets. Jackie Tang of Columbia earned a victory over Zatar, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the Qualifying round.
"Miguel proved this week that he could play with anybody," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "Ayed was serving big all week long, and I like his progress so far."
Ohio State's Martin Joyce took down Morell in the opening match of the Qualifying round. Morell lost a close battle against North Florida's Jefta Kecic in the consolation bracket, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
In the Qualifying Doubles first round, Morell and Zatar were taken down by a pair from Washington, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (2). Issa and Negre were also eliminated in the first round by a score of 6-3, 7-5 by a duo from Florida.
Rauch, Issa and Moonen all earned commanding victories in the consolation round of Pre-Qualifying singles.
"The guys all had some tough matches in Tulsa, and we were able to identify some areas that we need to improve in," Borendame added. "Overall, I really like the direction we are headed as a team. We're excited to start preparing for the regional in Knoxville."
Three fall events remain on the schedule for the Blue Raiders, including the ITA Regional Championship (Oct. 20-24), Commodore Scramble (Oct. 28-30) and the Alabama Four in the Fall (Nov. 4-6).
