MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After two hard-fought home losses last weekend, the Middle Tennessee women's soccer team goes on the road looking to get back in the win column this weekend. The Blue Raiders face off against WKU in Bowling Green on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and then travel to Marshall for a 1:00 p.m. CT meeting on Sunday.
WKU and MT have squared off 16 times since 2001 with the series tied, 5-5-6. Middle won the most recent battle, a 2-0 victory last October. Jessica Steen is the only returner to have picked up points in the contest as she tallied an assist in the match.
Marshall and Middle have met just three times in program history with the Herd leading 2-1. The Blue Raiders lost the 2015 contest, 3-2, at home. Marshall returns two of its three goal scorers from the last meeting for this season's battle.
Middle Tennessee (3-7-1) comes into the weekend following a heartbreaking double overtime loss to Florida International in their most recent match. The Blue Raiders erased a two-goal deficit as Charlotte Van Ishoven and Haley Nishimoto connected on both scores to force overtime, however, it was the Panthers who came away with the late winner in the second overtime period.
Salera Jordan leads the team in goals with five and has 40 shots on the year. Abbie Brown has four goals for the Blue Raiders to go with two assists. Courteney Gibson leads the team in assists with four.
Following last weekend's action Nishimoto now has three goals this year and Van Ishoven has three assists.
Sydney Chalcraft recorded three saves in the game versus FIU to bring her season total to 56. She is currently third in the conference is saves per game with 5.09.
WKU enters the match as one of the top teams in the conference with an 8-4, 3-1 record. Last weekend, the Hilltoppers went 1-1 picking up a 1-0 win at Rice before falling 2-1 at North Texas. Prior to the loss, WKU was on a five-game winning streak.
Chandler Backes leads the Hilltoppers as well as the conference in goals with nine. The freshman was named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 6 following three goals in two wins. Sarah Gorham leads WKU in assists with four while also notching two scores. Gorham had the assist in the Hilltoppers lone goal at North Texas.
On defense, WKU has a strong backline that have earned a number of awards so far this season. Nicole Roseland, Makenzie Costner and Olivia Fitzgerald have each earned C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors through the first half of the season. They have held their opponents to just ten goals through 12 matches and have recorded six shutout victories.
In goal for the Hilltoppers is Allison Leone, who was named C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week last week following a nine-save shutout performance in a win over Rice, her fifth-straight shutout of the season. She has 38 saves on the year and is currently second in the conference in goals against average, allowing just eight this season (.722) for an 8-3 record in net.
Marshall makes their way to the field with a 3-5-3, 1-2-1 record on the year. Last weekend the Herd went 1-0-1 in matches with Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech. Both games reached overtime with Marshall able to knock in a game winner against the Bulldogs in the first overtime period. It was the Herd's first win in the last six matches.
Jordan Sackaris leads the team in goals with six. Preseason All-Conference USA selection Sydney Arnold leads Marshall in assists with five to go with three goals. Arnold also has a team-leading 27 shots.
Emily Moreland and Megan Bonelli have each seen time in the goalkeeper position for Marshall. Moreland earned a C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week honor on August 29 following a shutout performance over Longwood. Bonelli has seen most of the action as of late, registering 27 saves for a 1-2-1 record.
