Raiders to compete in June Stewart Invitational
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The June Stewart Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt is next for Middle Tennessee women's tennis, and four Blue Raiders will compete against top talent again this weekend.
Maria Josefina Zehnder, Luisa Zirilli, Alory Pereira and Holly Horsfall will look to build off the success they've found early in the fall season when they take the courts in Nashville Oct. 7-9. The Blue Raiders have faced tough opponents through the first three events, and head coach Charlie Ramsay is keeping his team focused on the process.
"We've continued to work on the same things this week, which is being able to tolerate discomfort and getting mentally tougher," Ramsay said. "This sport requires a level of commitment to be able to tolerate discomfort that is difficult to achieve. It's been a really physical and challenging week during practice."
Zehnder enters the June Stewart Invitational with a singles record of 1-3 and a 2-2 doubles mark in her first fall as a Blue Raider. While Zirilli is still looking for her first fall singles triumph, she's posted an unblemished 3-0 doubles record.
Pereira earned three doubles wins at the Steve Baras Fall Classic to notch a 3-4 doubles record overall, despite a 3-3 singles record. Newcomer Holly Horsfall represented MT in two events this fall, posting a 1-3 singles record to go with a doubles mark of 1-2.
Vanderbilt will welcome Auburn, Kentucky and Ole Miss along with the Blue Raiders for this year's event. Action begins on Friday at noon, followed by 9:30 a.m. start times on Saturday and Sunday.
The Blue Raiders will host the ITA Ohio Valley Regional at the Adams Tennis Complex Oct. 20-24. Admission is free to every MT women's tennis event throughout the fall and spring seasons.
