Raiders fall 1-0 in Bowling Green
10/7/2016 7:55:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Middle Tennessee fell to rival WKU, 1-0, in a tightly contested match in Bowling Green Friday night despite a solid performance from goalkeeper Celeste Barnard.
Barnard earned her first career start in goal for the Blue Raiders and earned six saves in 90 minutes of action on the evening.
The Blue Raiders took seven shots on the evening but were only able to place two on frame while WKU put seven shots on target on the opposite end of the field.
MT started the contest with some key defensive stands to preserve a shutout as long as it could as Barnard logged four saves in the first 17 minutes of action before the WKU attack dropped off.
After over 20 minutes without allowing a shot on frame, the defense succumbed to a headed goal to the far post off of a set piece, giving WKU its first lead of the match in the 39th minute.
Middle showed some resiliency in the final minutes of the opening half with a pair of shots in the closing moments, including one on frame by substitute Abbie Brown.
Haley Nishimoto opened up the second half firing, taking a pair of shots in the first six minutes but couldn't test the WKU keeper between the posts in hopes of an equalizer.
The Blue Raiders and Hilltoppers traded a few shots following Nishimoto's fast start in the second half with neither coming up with a score for the remainder of the contest leaving WKU to escape with a 1-0 win.
Middle Tennessee travels into the eastern time zone on Sunday to take on Marshall in a 1:00 p.m. CT contest.
