Blue Raiders close weekend at FAU Sunday
RUSTON, La. — Five Blue Raiders turned in career highs Friday night, but the effort fell short as LA Tech claimed a 3-1 match win against Middle Tennessee.
Aubrie Huddleston led the Blue Raider attack with a career-high 17 kills, while Regan Coughlin tied a season-high with 15 kills and set a new career-high 26 digs.
Delaney Gallagher tied her career-high with eight kills and added three blocks. After setting a career high in assists on Wednesday, Jacqueline Lux matched the effort with 46 assists.
Sabrie Sirmones provided an offensive spark in the third and fourth sets with career-highs of four kills and two blocks.
The Blue Raiders struck quickly in the first set to claim a 2-0 lead, but the Lady Techsters answered to tie the set. From there, both teams traded points until LA Tech claimed a 10-8 lead that grew to 15-10. The Blue Raiders rallied to close the gap to 21-19, but the early momentum returned to Tech as the Lady Techsters took the first set 25-21.
Tech used the opening-set momentum to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second set that grew to 9-6. Meg Irvin answered from the service line with three aces in four points to give MT the lead 10-9. The remainder of the set became a back-and-forth thriller with neither team leading by more than three points. Tied 22-22, LA Tech found another spark of momentum and claimed the final three points to take a 2-0 match lead.
Middle Tennessee responded following intermission with its best offensive set in the third. Much like the second, both teams traded points to start the third frame, including nine ties. Tied 13-13, Middle Tennessee took over. Forcing three errors to take the lead, two Coughlin kills and an ace from Sirmones highlighted an MT 7-0 run. Kills from Huddleston, Coughlin and Sirmones helped close the set and put MT on the board with a 25-16 win in the third set.
The Raiders and Techsters began the final set just like the previous three. MT and LA Tech continued the back-and-forth, with LA Tech clinging to a 19-18 lead. The Techsters remained in control over the next few points with an offensive spark, and closed the set 25-19 to take the match 3-1.
The Blue Raiders will cap the weekend with a trip to Boca Raton, Fla. to face the FAU Owls Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
