MT hosts ITA Ohio Valley Regional next
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee faced top competition this weekend when it traveled to Vanderbilt to compete in the June Stewart Invitational, where student-athletes representing Ole Miss, Auburn and the Commodores squared off against four Blue Raiders.
Maria Josefina Zehnder competed in the top singles bracket, named after the professional major tournament Wimbledon, where she reached the finals of the consolation side of the bracket against Kentucky's Emily Fanning.
Senior Alory Pereira cruised through the Danny Birchmore Draw, the No. 2 singles bracket, with two straight set victories to earn a trip to the finals against Zalina Khairudinova from Ole Miss, where Pereira took the victory, 6-3, 6-3.
In the Morgan Parker singles draw, Luisa Zirilli won twice, including victories over Vanderbilt's Payton Robinette and Cameron Kriscunas over Ole Miss. Holly Horsfall also won over Robinette by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles action, Zehnder and Zirilli bounced back on Saturday after two close losses to begin the tournament to earn a win, 8-5, over Vanderbilt's Robinette and Turner. The pair finished the weekend with a 2-2 record, also winning over Robinette and Dvorak from Vanderbilt.
Pereira and Horsfall teamed up to earn a victory over Robinette and Turner on Sunday, after falling on the first two days of competition.
Middle Tennessee will host the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Oct. 20-24 at the Adams Tennis Complex. Admission is free to all MT women's tennis home events, and live scoring will be available.
