11/10/2016 1:30:00 PM | Track & Field/Cross Country
The Men's Team along with Hannah Maina Will Compete Friday
MURFREESBORO, Tenn.—The No. 26 ranked men's cross country team looks to continue its historic season in the NCAA South Regional in Tallahassee, Fla. at Apalachee Regional Park Friday morning.
The men's squad enters in as the only other nationally ranked team, aside from No. 11 Ole Miss. Host school Florida State, Georgia, and Alabama round out the top five in the South Regional rankings that will be competing in Friday's race.
The No. 7 ranked runner in the country (According to FloTrack) freshman Jacob Choge, looks to lead Middle Tennessee to a strong finish in the regional. Choge has made numerous headlines for his performances this season, most recently winning the Conference USA Championship last weekend.
The team looks to build off of its strong second place finish in the C-USA Championships, finishing behind only, then ranked No. 21 UTEP.
MT is returning four runners from last year's regional team, which placed seventh in the 2015 South Regional. Senior Hillary Rono placed ninth overall in last year's meet with a stellar 30:59.50 in the 10k. Other returners with regional experience include, Amos Cheruiyot, Geoffry Cheruiyot and Kigen Chemadi.
The combination of the returners, and newcomers Choge and Sampson Laari, bodes well for the team that is expected to place in the top tier of the field.
On the women's side, Hannah Maina will be running solo on Friday for the Blue Raiders. Maina placed seventh in the C-USA Championships last weekend and earned First Team All-Conference honors.
The women's 6k race will begin at 7:30 a.m. The men's 10k race is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
The top two teams for each gender, and the top four individuals not on those teams, automatically qualify for the Nov. 19 NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.
Live results with splits timing and scoring will be available at: http://live.pttiming.com/xc-ptt.html?DB_OEM_ID=32900&mid=104
Host Florida State will provide a Facebook Live feed of both races at: https://www.facebook.com/FSUSeminolesCrossCountry/.
