MT returns home to honor Lux in 2016 season finale
MIAMI, Fla. — In the final road match of the season, the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders fought until the very last point, but the effort fell just short as FIU took a five-set thriller Thursday night in FIU Arena.
Dora Peonia and Delaney Gallagher each posted career highs with 16 and 15 kills, respectively, for the Blue Raiders. Peonia also recorded a career-high 10 digs, giving the freshman her first career double-double. Gallagher added a team-best four blocks and earned a career-high 17.5 points.
Jacqueline Lux posted 50 assists, the second-most of the season, while Meg Irvin tied for a match-high with 20 digs.
The Raiders struck early in the opening set. MT went ahead 3-0 early behind kills from Gallagher and Regan Coughlin. A Jacqueline Lux ace and kills from Peonia and Makila York extended the lead to 8-3. York added a pair of aces, and strong defense in the middle by Coughlin and Vonnie Covington gave MT its biggest lead at 20-14. FIU rallied with a 5-2 run to close the gap at 22-19, but the Raiders forced a pair of errors late, and a kill by Coughlin put the set away at 25-22.
FIU responded in the second set with a late rally to get on the board. The Blue Raiders opened the set with a 5-3 lead behind kills from Gallagher, Covington and York. Gallagher also flashed the defense, as two more kills and a pair of blocks for the sophomore extended the lead to 11-7. FIU struck offensively to tie the set 13-13, and both teams traded points down the stretch of the set. Tied 19-19, three FIU errors and an Irvin ace opened a 23-19 advantage. FIU provided one final rally, as the Panthers claimed the next six points to win the second set 25-23.
FIU used the second-set win to take a 2-1 match lead in the third. Both teams traded points early until FIU established a 10-7 lead. MT answered to cut the deficit to 11-9, but the Panthers surged, taking 14 of the final 19 set points to win the third set 25-14.
Seeking to put the match away, FIU opened an early advantage until Middle Tennessee rallied. With the home team leading 13-8, a kill by Aubrie Huddleston sparked a Blue Raider comeback. A pair of kills by Coughlin followed by a point by Peonia trimmed the gap, and a pair of FIU errors forced a 15-15 tie. A Peonia ace broke an 18-18 tie, while another Huddleston kill two points later gave MT a 19-18 lead. Tied 21-21, a kill by Coughlin and Huddleston's 13th ace of the season gave MT set point at 24-21. FIU offered a rally of their own, but one final kill by Peonia put the set away 25-23 and forced a fifth and final frame.
The Raiders struck first with a kill in the fifth before FIU answered with three straight points. Covington and Huddleston tallied kills to close the gap, and a Peonia kill and FIU error tied the set 8-8. FIU answered with a pair of kills to take control at 12-9. MT offered one final push, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Panther took the final set 15-12 to claim the match.
Katie Hogan led the Panthers (9-18, 3-10) with 25 kills. Defensively, FIU tallied 19 blocks, including eight solo swats.
