Blue Raiders fall to North Texas in season finale
11/12/2016 2:12:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — In the 2016 season finale, Middle Tennessee provided a valiant effort, but dropped a three-set match to the North Texas Mean Green Saturday afternoon in Alumni Memorial Gym.
Regan Coughlin led the MT offense with 11 kills. Delaney Gallagher followed her career performance at FIU with 10 kills Saturday, the second-most of her career.
The Blue Raiders celebrated the career of Jacqueline Lux who is set to graduate in May. The setter dished out 30 assists in her final match as a Raider. Lux completed her impressive career with 1,078 assists and 1,035 digs.
North Texas (13-16, 7-7) opened the match with a 4-0 lead and didn't look back. A kill and an ace from Dora Peonia trimmed to gap to 6-4, but NT kept its distance. Leading 11-9 the Mean Green claimed nine of the next 11 points to cushion the lead to 20-11. The Blue Raiders sparked the offense with a rally behind kills from Lux and Coughlin to cut the lead to 23-18, but North Texas found kills by Alexis Wright and Holly Milam to close the set and strike first in the match.
North Texas used the first-set win to strike again with a 3-0 lead in the second set. The Raiders rallied behind kills from Makila York and Gallagher to force a 4-4 tie. The two teams then traded points, until North Texas gained momentum with a 16-11 lead. The Raiders briefly rallied, but the Mean Green closed the set with a 4-1 run to claim a 2-0 match advantage.
Much like the first two sets, North Texas claimed an early lead before the Raiders responded. Trailing 4-1, kills from Coughlin and Gallagher along with a Bailey Mason ace gave the Raiders a 5-4 lead. MT used the momentum to jump ahead 10-7 behind more kills from Coughlin and York. MT continued its offensive surge with a 3-0 run when Gallagher and Mason ripped three straight kills to build an 18-13 lead, but North Texas answered. Trailing 23-19, the Mean Green used three kills, an ace and a pair of MT errors on a 6-0 to complete the comeback and take the match.
Amanda Chamberlain and Milam led the Mean Green with 14 and 13 kills, respectively, while LekaLeka Kiner-Falefa added a match-high 16 digs.
