MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee will look to get back on track before heading to Nashville for the Challenge in Music City with a Tuesday evening contest against Toledo in the Murphy Center.
The Blue Raiders face Toledo for the second time in two years after downing the Rockets, 78-70, in the Great Alaska Shootout championship game in 2015. It will also mark the first of two meetings between the two this season as they face off again on Saturday as part of the Challenge in Music City.
The Blue Raiders are coming off of a 74-63 loss to Tennessee State in which they struggled to rebound and capitalize on free throws while the Tigers were able to shoot 65 percent in the second half to take control.
"We've played two really good teams back-to-back and Toledo might be the best team that we've seen to date," Head Coach Kermit Davis said. "They're a really well-coached team and it's a team that is going to have a chance to win the MAC."
Senior JaCorey Williams continues to lead the Raiders in scoring at 20.3 points per game while fellow post man Reggie Upshaw is boasting 16.3 points and nine rebounds per game to go along with team highs in assists (12) and blocks (4).
The Rockets have won two in a row after narrowly falling in their season opener on the road against Saint Joseph's. Toledo most recently earned an 82-78 road win against Wright State on Saturday.
Jonathan Williams is pacing the Rockets offensively with 21.7 points per game while Marquette transfer Steve Taylor, Jr., is averaging 16.7 points and 13.3 rebounds per outing.
"They lost a tough one at Saint Joseph's by one and just had a really good road win at Wright State," Davis added. "There are a lot of guys returning from the team that we played last year in the Great Alaska Shootout and they added a transfer from Marquette, Taylor, who right now is averaging 17 and 13."
Middle Tennessee is 2-1 all-time against Toledo with all three meetings coming in regular season tournaments. The two teams will be playing in the continental U.S. for the first time after previously meeting in Alaska (2015), the Virgin Islands (2006) and Puerto Rico (2004).
Tuesday's contest at the Murphy Center is set for a 6:30 p.m. tip.
