MT signs two setters for 2017
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee welcomes two newcomers to its volleyball program for the 2017 season after Shelbie Dobmeier and Maddie Sweeney signed National Letters of Intent, interim head coach Jeff Huebner announced.
Shelbie Dobmeier // Lakewood, Calif. // Lakewood HS // S
Dobmeier joins the MT program from Lakewood, Calif., where she has helped the Lancers claim at least a share of the league championship each year of her high school career. Dobmeier was an intricate part in leading the Lancers to a 27-5 regular season record this season, including a perfect 12-0 ledger in league play, and is currently competing in the Division I CIF State Championship quarterfinals.
Huebner on Dobmeier: "Shelbie is going to be a huge addition for us. Aside from her ability to set from any position on the court, she is able to run a 5-1 and really solidify a position we need to be great at if we want to be successful moving into the future. It's been a long time since Middle Tennessee has had an All-Conference setter, and we expect Shelbie to grow into that role for us as a Blue Raider."
Maddie Sweeney // Charlotte, N.C. // Ardrey Kell HS // OPP/S
Sweeney comes to MT following a successful prep career at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, N.C. Sweeney provides a balanced attack, as the versatile southpaw dished out 1,576 assists coupled with 379 kills in her final three seasons at Ardrey Kell. Sweeney also helped guide the Knights to a 19-10 record this season, including an 11-3 mark in conference play. Sweeney capped her career with her fourth-straight state playoff berth and a Regional Finals appearance this season.
Huebner on Sweeney: "Maddie is a great kid. She's a physical player and is really good at attacking second contact. Being left handed, I think she adds a dimension to our program that really is something that will be a huge advantage for us. We see it occasionally with a left handed setter, but we will get to see it every day in our gym, and that's going to make us better. She's a great attacker. She runs a 6-2 for her high school program and a 5-1 for her club, so she's got experience in multiple capacities. We're excited to get her on campus. She's a bright kid, and we're looking forward to her competing. She's going to be really successful here."
