Eight reach double figures
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Results of exhibition games do not count, but Middle Tennessee Head Coach had to like the manner in which his team performed in a 124-35 win against Truett McConnell at Murphy Center Thursday night.
The Blue Raiders surpassed the 100-point mark for the second straight game and every player scored for the second straight contest, with eight Middle Tennessee players reaching double figures.
Jess Louro led the balanced attack with 19 points on the strength of six 3-pointers. She also added four steals. Alex Johnson had a solid night with 18 points, and Charity Savage was strong in the post once again with 15 points.
Ty Petty finished with 13 points and eight assists, while Kyla Allison and Jordan Majors added 12 points each. Majors also had five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. Abbey Sissom was solid all around with 11 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals. Gabby Lyon was stellar and rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points to go with a game-high 14 rebounds.
Sophomore Katie Collier earned her first start and responded with seven points, 10 assists, no turnovers and four steals in another solid showing.
"Obviously, we are pleased with the result but we aren't going to read a lot into it," Insell said. "I thought we played well and we executed well. I was pleased with how we shot the ball, but we have to do a better job at the free-throw line."
Perhaps the only negative in an otherwise solid outing was a 67 percent (28-of-42) clip from the charity stripe. Otherwise, the Blue Raiders shot extremely well. They were 59 percent (42-of-71) from the field, including a sizzling 54 percent (13-of-24) effort from 3-point range.
Middle Tennessee starting guards were effective. The trio of Collier, Petty and Sissom combined to score 31 points on 14-of-24 from the field, including 9-of-15 from 3-point range. They also combined for 25 assists, only six turnovers and nine steals.
Middle Tennessee's bench scored 66 points and the Blue Raiders poured 42 points in the paint, while scoring 53 points off of turnovers.
With two exhibition wins under their belt, the Blue Raiders begin the regular season in earnest when they travel to Virginia, Nov. 11.
