Rick Stockstill quotes // Dec. 13, 2016 // Bowl Game Preview
Opening Statement…
"I appreciate everybody being here. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season. I'm really excited to be here and representing our football team, our university and our conference in the Hawaii Bowl. I'm really proud of what this football team has accomplished this year. I'm sure every coach talks about adversity that a team has to overcome throughout the course of the year, and every team has to do that, but I don't know if I have ever been a part of a team that had to overcome as much adversity as they have. Because of what they have done and how hard they have played and compete, that makes this team special. They are very deserving of playing in this bowl game. What a great bowl game they get to play in. When you really think about what this senior class has done, they have been bowl eligible all five years they have been here. With what they have done off the field and done academically, everything they have done, these guys should leave here with their chest stuck out and be proud of what they have done. We have had four practices now in preparation for this game. We had one a week after the FAU game and two last Friday and Saturday, and then one yesterday. We're getting into the meat and potatoes of our practice schedule. Our attitude has been wonderful. They are very focused. I like the intensity and focus we are approaching this game with.
We're playing a really good football team. Defensively, they are all over the place. They are going to blitz you as soon as that plane lands in Honolulu next Monday. We have to be able to handle their pressure. They are an attacking, aggressive defense. I think the strength of their defense is probably their linebackers. They are very active. Their whole team plays extremely hard. Anybody who turns on the film, whether you're a football coach, a player or just a fan, the thing that jumps out to you is how hard this team plays. That's a credit to their coaching staff and to their players. Their linebackers are active. They run and are good athletes, and I think that's the strength of their defense. With their secondary, you're going to get safety blitzes and corner blitzes. You're going to get a lot of pressure on the back end there, and we have to be able to handle that. Their front is a little like us in a way in that they aren't gigantic. They have a couple 300-pound guys in there. They have more of the 275, 280, 265-pound guys like we have that are athletic and can run.
Offensively, they will give you multiple formations and get in big sets. They'll spread you out and there will be some four-wide. They will get into some bigger sets with the utilization of the tight end. Their line is good. They have given up 23 sacks on the year, so a little a little bit less than two a game, and they have gotten 23 sacks, so we have to do a good job on the line of scrimmage both offensively and defensively to be able to handle their guys. Their offensive line is good. They are athletic. They are not SEC-type guys like we saw at Missouri. They are comparable to what we have played in Conference USA from a size standpoint. I think they have excellent receivers who can run. Their running back is good. At quarterback they had a change. They had a young guy in there earlier, and they made a change and have been a lot more consistent throughout that change. I think they are special in the kicking game. I believe their field goal kicker is 12 out of 12. He hasn't missed this year. The punter is averaging 44 yards per punt, and they cover well. We have to be good in the kicking game because I think they are special in the kicking game.
The part of this game that I've talked to this team about, we have to prepare mentally and physically for this game. We can't wait until we get there. That's been our mindset for the past week and it's how we will finish out this week. This is different than a bowl game in that who we are playing is waiting on us right now. They are waiting for us to get off that plane. We have a nine-and-a-half-hour flight to get there less than a week. We have to do a great job from a preparation standpoint in taking care of our bodies, getting rest, hydrating and then preparing ourselves physically for this game. It is unique when you think about it that who you are playing is waiting on you to get off that plane. I know our guys are excited and anxious to get there. It's a tremendous reward for them. They deserve this. These guys had a really special year and I'm extremely proud of them."
On adjusting to the time change…
"It's a four hour time change. They are four hours behind us. You talk about it and you hope it sits in. Keith Bunch, our trainer, has done a great job. Jason Spray and those guys in the weight room have done a great job. We talk about hydration and that we have to hydrate. We probably give them more fluids than we normally do in the course of a regular game. We talk about sleep and getting their rest. I can't make them go to bed, and I can't turn the light off for them. I hope they are mature enough to understand the importance of getting your rest, getting your sleep and hydrating here because when we get to Hawaii it's going to be too late. I hope they listen and understand the message I've been telling them the last week and a half."
On players getting the opportunity to go to Hawaii who haven't traveled much in their life…
"I think being a college athlete is a tremendous opportunity to experience many different things in your lifetime that you wouldn't get the chance to experience. I had never been to Utah, and when we played BYU out there that was the first time I had been there. Last year going to the Bahamas, probably for 90 percent of the team it was the first time they had been to the Bahamas, and probably 90 percent of the team will never go back to the Bahamas. You're afforded the opportunities to visit places you haven't been exposed to before as a young kid growing up. You get to travel to different places, states and countries that you don't normally have the opportunity for. These guys in history classes were taught about Pearl Harbor and the effects of that, and now they are going to get to walk out there on that water that 75 years ago was under attack. You try to educate your players on different places they go and what happened there. It's a great opportunity for these young men to create a memory. As an 18, 19, 20, 21-year-old young man, you get to do this and create this memory with your teammates and your coaches. I get to create this memory with our players that you hold on to forever. It's a wonderful and unique opportunity for everybody on this team."
On balancing team activities with preparing to win…
"I talked about it when we got the invitation to go to the Hawaii Bowl that Sunday. Our main objective is to win the game. When we are here, we are going to work. Nobody is going to work harder than us, whether it's lifting weights, in meeting rooms or on the practice field. I'm not monopolizing their whole day. We put in a few hours in the morning and we put in a few hours in the afternoon. They have some time off here in the afternoon and evenings where they can hang out with each other and they can go to the mall and buy me a Christmas present or whatever they want to do. There is a fine line, and I think this team is mature enough to understand that. They are going to get up earlier there. We'll have wake-up calls at 7, meetings at 8, which is 12 o'clock on our clock. We have to get on Hawaii time the day we get there. As soon as we land, we are going to the stadium to practice. That's how important this is to me and how important it is to our team. There will be activities they get to do that will be incredible experiences that will be a lot of fun. There will be time to have fun and enjoy it, and there will be a time to buckle down and understand why we are there. These guys probably workout, lift, run and practice 340 days out of the year. It would be insane on my part not to reward these guys for giving this program and this university 340 days out of 365 and how hard they work not to enjoy this. We'll understand what we are there for, and our preparation will never take second place."
On quarterback health and possibility of Brent Stockstill returning…
"I'm very optimistic. He's practiced for a while now. He is throwing the ball well. Each week we get an X-ray to see how the healing is coming along, and it's coming along good. We don't know yet. We are preparing like it's going to be okay, but we won't know that for another few days. I'm optimistic with what I've seen and what he has done so far. With John (Urzua) hasn't been cleared yet. Hopefully today or tomorrow he will. I think by the time we leave for Hawaii he will be cleared, but today he is not."
On Hawaii's offense…
"I think it's a very balanced offense. The Timmy Chang's of the world back in the day where they were throwing it every snap, they changed that. I think they are very balanced. Their run-pass is very balanced, not only in play call selection but also in productivity. They max protect. They are going to max protect and try to take some shots down the field. Their running backs are good, so we have to do a good job of tackling. We have given up a bunch of yards rushing here in the last few games. We have to get better and improve in that area. I think it's critical, especially in this game being able to slow down their running game, because they will always have a fresh back in there. I think all four of those guys get about an equal amount of snaps during the course of a game, and they are all very productive. It's going to come down more to us than them – how well we fit our gaps, how well we tackle, how physical we are and how well we execute the fundamentals of the play call."
On Hawaii quarterback Dru Brown…
"They are a multiple offensive team. They will get in many different formations, sets and personnel groupings. They are multiple. I think he has done a nice job. He's won some games down the stretch for them and got them in a bowl game. I think he's a tough kid, and I bet he is a good leader. I don't know that, but watching him play, I bet his team rallies around him. He can make all the throws. He's a good player. He's a guy that I have a lot of respect for in the little bit of film I've seen that last four or five days. I've been impressed with him. He's won close games for them, and he is a good player."
On players commenting that their head coach would be the best hula dancer…
"Absolutely. They asked me and he was right. If you go to Hawaii, you might as well. I'll get out there at that luau."
"I appreciate you guys again. Thanks for the whole year. It means a lot to me, especially you guys who come from Nashville to give up this time. I respect you and appreciate you. Have a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and go Blue Raiders."
Player Quotes 12-13-16
Raynard Felton
On the opportunity to go to Hawaii…
We're blessed. It's another opportunity God blessed us with to go play another game, have fun, and enjoy each other's company for another two to three weeks. What I'm most excited to do out there is to have fun with these guys. It's bittersweet. Coach Stockstill will have a good itinerary set up for us, so everything we'll do, we'll enjoy.
On watching the redshirt guys in practice…
Those guys will do a lot of hitting. I know my freshman year was a lot of hitting and every year you see the growth and development. Now that I see them scrimmage, I look forward to the years to come from the young guys, and I can't wait to see what role they'll play for Middle Tennessee football. In the five years I've been here, we've always had good bowl practices. Coach Stockstill gives guys a chance to show what they've got to the older guys. It gives us a chance to talk competitively to each other while we're coaching up the younger guys.
On what the hunger is like to win his first bowl game…
We're very hungry. We saw the bowl games and the preparation we put forth in the previous bowl games, and now we feel like we're preparing better. We're more focused and have a better understanding. We're all on one page, and everybody is going to Hawaii to win this game, so while we're here we're just focused on winning.
On how the family has adjusted to the bowl game…
I feel like my family kept me high-spirited. They know this is my last bowl game, and personally I wanted my family to attend it because last year we went to the Bahamas. They never complained or anything. They said 'Go ahead, and we'll watch it.' It's a big game in Hawaii and very exciting, so I feel like our families have accepted it, and we have to go out there and make them proud.

On the opportunity to go to Hawaii…
I'm just looking forward to the whole bowl atmosphere. Like Coach Stockstill said, many of us don't get the chance to go see nice places like this, so I'll take lots of pictures and send them to my family.
On what it means for the hometown team be bowl eligible five consecutive years…
I'm all about winning, so when I transferred, the only thing that was on my mind was winning championships and winning games, which we won a lot of games. Once when I was at Ole Miss, I saw the boys playing Georgia Tech, and I remember telling my teammates, 'That's my home team right there on the screen and hopefully they can pull it off,' and at the end of the game they won, so I was very excited for that.
On facing Hawaii's defense…
As soon as we turned on the film, we saw them blitz every play we watched, so I'll have to be ready to stay low and block well. I'll have to adjust to certain things and knowing which guy to pick up and which guy I need to help out on.
On how the family has adjusted to the bowl game…
Since I've been in college, I've never been able to go home for Christmas anyway, so my family is kind of used to it. They told me they're excited for me to go to Hawaii and to have fun.
Brent Stockstill
On the opportunity to go to Hawaii…
We're all very humbled to have this opportunity. I think it's just another opportunity to enjoy ourselves and these seniors. They've done a lot for this program and they deserve an opportunity to go out and there's really no better place to do that than Hawaii, so I'm looking forward to doing it for the seniors, enjoying every moment, but also working at the same time and going there to get a win for those guys.
On what he's been able to do recently…
I'm always good. There's never a question about that. I'm always ready to get back to practice with the guys and run around a little bit. I feel good. I feel healthy. I feel like if it was up to me, I'd say I'm ready to go, but it's not up to me. We'll just keep checking in with the doctors. I'm very optimistic about it, but I'm not going to get my hopes up. We'll see what happens.
On what it means for the hometown team to be bowl eligible five consecutive years…
Part of the reason why I chose to come here is to do something special here, to build this program and take it places it's never been. We're not there, by any means. We want to win championships, but this was a great year, and our seniors have raised the standard here. We no longer just want to be bowl eligible. We want to win nine or 10 games, and that's what we tried to do this year. Playing here in Murfreesboro has been an honor, and hopefully we can continue to grow this program.
On how the family has adjusted to the bowl game…
It's a family affair for me, so we don't really have a choice.
DJ Sanders
On the opportunity to go to Hawaii…
It's just another opportunity to play football with my brothers and have some fun in a place that we'll never go again. We'll enjoy it. I'm really looking forward to watching Coach Stockstill do that hula dance.
On learning from the Bahamas Bowl experience…
It was a learning experience for me, especially since I had never been to a bowl game. It taught me that it was a business trip, but we have to have fun also. We can't be too serious.
On being a permanent team captain…
It's an honor to be named a permanent team captain. I didn't think I would get it, and it's unbelievable to me.
On what to do in between practices and team functions…
Lately I've been Christmas shopping for Coach Stockstill.
On how the family has adjusted to the bowl game…
Last year my family waited to eat until I got home, but this year they said 'DJ, I guess we'll save you a plate or something.'

On being a permanent team captain…

On what to do in between practices and team functions…
Lately I've been Christmas shopping for Coach Stockstill.
On how the family has adjusted to the bowl game…
Last year my family waited to eat until I got home, but this year they said 'DJ, I guess we'll save you a plate or something.'
